Michael "Mike" Alvarado (* 28. July 1980 in Denver ) is an American professional boxer and former world champion of the WBO in the light welterweight .

Private life and beginnings in boxing

Mike Alvarado grew up with four sisters and one brother in Thornton and attended Skyview High School there . His father is the former professional boxer Ron Cisneros aka The Rocky Mountain Assassin , his mother worked as an employee in an institute for refractive surgery . His cousin Ricky Lopez is also a professional boxer. Alvarado began at the age of four years with the rings and won seven national titles in the sport, before he moved at the age of 20 years to boxing.

As an amateur, he won 36 of 41 fights, won the Colorado Golden Gloves twice and became Ringside National Champion in 2001 , beating Chad Aquino and Andre Dirrell . At the National Golden Gloves 2001 he was defeated in the quarterfinals against James Parison, at the US Championships in 2003 in the second round on points against Lamont Peterson . At the National Golden Gloves 2003 he was eliminated in the round of 16 with a 2: 3 point decision against Charles Hatley.

Professional career

Managed by Henry Delgado, Shelly Finkel and Frank Acosta, he switched to the professional camp and is trained by Shann Vilhauer. He played his first professional fight on February 28, 2004 in Thornton and won by knockout in the first round. He was also able to decide his next six fights early, four of them in the first round. He celebrated his first points win on March 19, 2005 in Las Vegas against Hilario López, the later interim youth world champion of the WBC.

Before his first chance for the title, he had played 21 more victorious fights, 18 of them against boxers with positive results. He also defeated the later IBF world champion Carlos Amado Molina , the WBO world championship challenger Michael Clark and the ex- WBC world champion Cesar Bazan .

On May 7, 2011 he secured himself by an early win against Ray Narh, the championship of the American continent of the WBC. On July 30 of the same year he defeated Gabriel Alejandro Martínez unanimously on points and was thus also Latin American champion of the IBF. In November he managed an early win against Breidis Prescott , and in April 2012 a points win against Mauricio Herrera.

On October 13, 2012, he boxed against the also unbeaten Brandon Ríos (30-0, 23 K. o.) And lost after a tough duel by technical knockout in the seventh round. At the rematch on March 30, 2013 in Las Vegas, Alvarado was able to prevail unanimously on points, thus winning the WBO interim world championship and was thus listed as number 2 in the WBO world rankings behind Juan Marquez . On the world rankings of the Ring Magazine he was in 4th place. However, since Juan Manuel Márquez rose to welterweight, Alvarado was declared the new regular world champion of the WBO light welterweight on October 12.

On October 19, he was supposed to defend his title in Denver against Ruslan Prowodnikov , but was twice against the Russian in the eighth round and finally lost in the tenth by technical knockout. On May 17, 2014, he boxed in a WBO- Elimination of the welterweight title against Juan Márquez (55-7), but was subject to this on points.

On January 24, 2015 he lost in his third duel against Brandon Ríos (32-2) prematurely in the third round.
