The Museo de Antioquia (also known as Museo y Biblioteca de Zea ) is a nature and culture museum in the second largest Colombian city of Medellín .

history

The Museum of Antioquia was founded on November 29, 1881 by the government of the then sovereign Departamento de Antioquia with the name Museo y Biblioteca de Zea , in honor of the botanist and diplomat Francisco Antonio Zea . On July 20, 1882, the official opening took place at the first location in "Parque Berrio". In 1905, as an annex to Decree 513, the Zea Museum and Library were assigned to the University of Antioquia and Tulio Ospina , then President and Director of the institution, carried out the scientific classification of the mineral collection.

Due to the continuous expansion of the collections and the library, the premises became too small at the end of the 1970s. In 1988, the Bank Banco Hipotecario de Colombia donated a historic building complex with a constructed area of 9,840 m² and two inner courtyards ( patio ) with a botanical garden to the museum . In addition to the numerous exhibition rooms on three floors, the complex now houses a library, a restaurant, two cafes and sanitary facilities.

April 2012 on the occasion of Fernando Botero's 80th birthday , his works were exhibited in the Museum de Antioquia. The artist Botero then decided to donate the entire series of paintings and drawings of his numerous sculptures to the museum.
