Tulio Ospina Vásquez (born April 4, 1857 in Medellín ; † February 17, 1921 ibid) was a Colombian mining engineer , historian , scientist and entrepreneur as well as the author of numerous books and writings.

Life

Tulio Ospina was born in April 1857 in his parents' house. Shortly thereafter, his father Mariano Ospina Rodríguez (1805-1885) was appointed to Bogotá and president of the Republic of New Granada . In 1877 Tulio moved to San Francisco , California , where he studied English at the College of Santa Clara . At the end of July 1877, he and his brother Pedro Nelo began studying mining and metallurgy at the University of California at Berkeley . Tulio Ospina also received his doctorate there. At the end of 1882 he came back to Medellin and together with his brother founded a mining company which, in addition to gold mining, was supplemented by a laboratory for melting and testing precious metals.

In 1904 he became rector of the University of Antioquia and co-founder, president and from 1911 professor of the legendary Escuela Nacional de Minas (mining academy) founded in 1895 and founder of the academy of history.

Posthumously

A bust stands in his honor today in the entrance of the Facultad de Minas (Universidad Nacional de Colombia).
