Danny Oscar García (born March 20, 1988 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American professional boxer of Puerto Rican descent, former world champion of the WBC and super world champion of the WBA light welterweight, as well as former world champion of the WBC welterweight.
Amateur career
In 2005 he became the US U19 lightweight champion and also won the international 26th Tammer tournament in Finland . In 2006 he became the American lightweight champion, defeating Ray Robinson, Jesse Belmontes, Terence Crawford and Luis Ramos.
In 2007 he defeated James Berry, Ronnie Reams, Hector Ramos and Andre Sherard at the US light welterweight championships, but then lost in the semifinals just against Brad Solomon (13:14), with which he won the bronze medal. In the national elimination bouts for participation in the 2008 Summer Olympics , the so-called US Olympic Trials in August 2007 in Houston , he reached second place in the light welterweight division. He won victories against Samuel Martínez, Michael Dallas, Jeremy Bryan and Daniel O'Connor. Only in the final he was defeated by Javier Molina on points. Another defeat in his amateur career he suffered against Miguel Ángel García .
In the same year he moved to the professional camp after 120 amateur fights, of which he won 107.
Professional career
Shortly before his professional debut, he was signed by Golden Boy Promotions and won his first professional fight on November 17, 2007 in Atlantic City by knockout in the first round against Mike Denby. By mid-2009 he defeated 13 other opponents, eight of them by knockout. On December 2, 2009, he won in Philadelphia the intercontinental youth title of the WBC Association in the light welterweight; he defeated the Mexican Enrique Colin Reyes (28 wins - 6 losses) by knockout in the second round.
On February 26, 2010 he also managed to win points against the Briton Ashley Theophane (25-3), and on May 7, 2010 a tKo win against Christopher Leonard Fernández (18-9). On July 30, 2010, he defeated the Mexican Jorge Romero (17-2) away by tKo and was thus interim youth world champion of the WBC welterweight. With three subsequent victories, among others against the former North American champion Mike Arnaoutis (22-6) and the former WBA / WBO / IBF world champion Nate Campbell (33-7), he qualified for a World Championship title eliminator.
He won this on October 15, 2011 in Los Angeles on points against former WBO world champion Kendall Holt (27-4), where he was also honored with the intercontinental championship of the WBO light welterweight. Thus he received on March 24, 2012 a world title fight of the WBC light welterweight against Érik Morales (52-7), which he defeated over 12 rounds unanimously on points and had in the eleventh round on the ground.
On July 14, 2012 he boxed in Las Vegas in a title union against WBA world champion Amir Khan (26-2). He had his opponent on the ground three times and won in the fourth round prematurely by tKo, because the referee stepped in and took Khan out of the fight. On October 20, he also won the rematch against Érik Morales by knockout in the fourth round.
On April 27, 2013, he boxed against Zab Judah (42-7), had it on the ground in the eighth round and finally won by unanimous decision. He was also able to defeat the powerful Argentinian Lucas Matthysse (34-2) on September 14, 2013 unanimously on points. He celebrated another point win on March 15, 2014 against Mauricio Herrera (20-3).
In August 2014 he defeated Rod Salka (19-3) by knockout in the second round. In April 2015, he won points against Lamont Peterson (33-2). On August 1, 2015, he managed an early win against Paul Malignaggi (33-6).
On January 23, 2016, he boxed for the WBC welterweight title, which Floyd Mayweather Jr. had resigned due to the end of his career. He defeated Robert Guerrero (33-3) unanimously on points in Los Angeles . In November 2016, he beat Samuel Vargas (25-2) prematurely. In a title unification fight on March 4, 2017 against WBA title holder Keith Thurman (27-0), he lost by split judge decision over twelve rounds.
On February 17, 2018, he won by technical knockout in the ninth round against Brandon Ríos (34-3). In September 2018 he boxed again for the WBC world title, but lost unanimously to Shawn Porter (28-2).
