Nathaniel "Nate" Campbell (born March 7, 1972 in Jacksonville , Florida ) is an American professional boxer and former lightweight world champion of the WBA , IBF and WBO associations .
Career
He only started boxing at the age of 24 after being persuaded to do so by a work colleague who had seen him boxing in the shadows as an employee of a supermarket . From 1997 to 1999 he won the Florida Championships three times in a row and also took part in the National Golden Gloves in Syracuse in 1999 , where he was eliminated in the round of 16. After 36 amateur fights, including 30 wins, he switched to the professional camp shortly before his 28th birthday.
He played his first professional fight on February 5, 2000 in Tallahassee, defeating Scoey Fields in the first round. By November 2002 he won each of his 23 fights, 21 of them prematurely. In addition to a number of build-up opponents, he also beat boxers with positive records such as Sergio Olivas (7-0), Victorio Abadia (18-1), Carlos Navarro (23-2) and Daniel Alicea (27-4). He was North American champion of NABF and NABA in super featherweight.
He suffered his first defeat on January 25, 2003 over ten rounds on points against Joel Casamayor (28-1) and boxed just four months later in a draw against Edelmiro Martinez (20-2). Only after more than seven months did he get back into the ring, defeating Daniel Attah (21-2) unanimously on points in January 2004. In the subsequent fight for the US championship in March 2004, he lost by knockout in the fifth round against Robbie Peden (22-2). After a successful rematch against Edelmiro Martinez, he boxed again on February 23, 2005 in Australia against Robbie Peden for the IBF super featherweight championship, but lost to tKo in the eighth round.
After four more fights, including a point defeat against Francisco Lorenzo (21-3) and a knockout win against Almasbek Raimkulow (20-0), he boxed for the IBO lightweight world championship against Isaac Hlatshwayo (23- 0), but was defeated by just a few points. However, he then defeated Matt Zegan (37-1), Ricky Quiles (39-7) and Wilson Alcorro (25-7), which gave him another World Cup chance. So he entered the ring on March 8, 2008 in Mexico against the unbeaten Juan Díaz (33-0), who at that time was wearing the lightweight IBF, WBA and WBO world championship belts. Campbell was able to prevail over 12 rounds on points.
On February 14th, 2009 he was supposed to defend his title against Ali Funeka (30-1), but his world championship belt was stripped of his weight limit on February 13th. The fight against Funeka took place anyway; Campbell won this over 12 rounds on points. On August 1, 2009 he boxed against Timothy Bradley (24-0) without judgment. The reason for this was a cut injury to the disadvantage of Campbell caused by an unintentional headbutt. He lost subsequent fights against Victor Ortiz (26-2), Danny García (20-0) and Chabib Allachwerdiew (14-0), but won against Victor Cayo (27-2) prematurely in March 2012.
