José Miguel Vázquez Bautista (born January 6, 1987 in Guadalajara ) is a Mexican professional boxer and former IBF world champion in lightweight.

Boxing career

He started boxing at the age of 12 and won 70 of 80 amateur fights before moving to the professional field at the age of 19. In his professional debut on January 20, 2006 in Guadalajara, he met the later superstar Saúl Álvarez and was defeated by this just on points. He then won 18 fights in a row, including against 11 undefeated boxers. In July 2007 he boxed in California for the World Youth Championship of the WBC light welterweight, but lost to Timothy Bradley unanimously on points. Also in the rematch against Saúl Álvarez on June 28, 2008, he had to admit defeat on points.

His most significant success up to then he achieved on July 17, 2009 in Las Vegas , when he defeated the undefeated Colombian Breidis Prescott (21-0, 19 early) over ten rounds on points. Prescott had risen to number 8 in the world rankings ( Ring Magazine ) through early wins against Amir Khan (18-0) and Humberto Toledo (33-5) ; This placement was now automatically transferred to Vázquez.

On August 14, 2010, he received a title fight for the vacant IBF lightweight world championship after Nate Campbell had been stripped of the title due to exceeding the weight limit. He prevailed unanimously on points in Texas against the South Korean Ji-Hoon Kim (21-5, 18 K. o.) And defended the title three and a half months later also unanimously against his compatriot Ricardo Dominguez (32-6).

On March 12, 2011, he defeated the undefeated Australian IBO World Champion Leonardo Zappavigna (25-0, 17 knockout) unanimously on points and won three months later by knockout in the second round against Marlon Aguilar from Nicaragua. This was followed by title defenses against Ammeth Diaz from Panama (30-10), Marvin Quintero from Mexico (25-3) and Mercito Gesta from the Philippines (26-0).

In March 2013 he should get a title unification chance against WBO world champion Ricky Burns , but the fight did not take place due to an illness of Vázquez. His next title defense was on February 22nd, 2014 against Denis Schafikow (33-0) and won unanimously on points.

On September 13, 2014 he lost his world title by losing points to Mickey Bey (20-1). In March 2015, he beat Jerry Belmontes (19-5) on points. In November 2017 he lost to Josh Taylor (10-0) by knockout .
