Jerry Belmontes

Jerry Belmontes (born December 4, 1988 in Corpus Christi , Texas ) is an American professional boxer in the super featherweight division .

Amateur career

Belmontes won 115 of 133 fights as an amateur. He won the gold medal at the National Silver Gloves in 2003, as well as the silver medal at the National Silver Gloves 2004 and the National Junior Olympics 2005. In October 2005 he also won a bronze medal in featherweight at the Cadet World Championships in Liverpool . He defeated Florin Picoi from Romania and Noe Lopez from Mexico prematurely before he was eliminated in the semifinals against Onur Şipal from Turkey with 18:20. In 2006 he won the US Junior Championships. In September 2006 he still took part in the Junior World Championships in Agadir , but lost in the round of 16 against John Joyce from Ireland.

In the elite class (adults), he won the silver medal at the US lightweight championships in 2007. He beat Isaac Arasto, Michael Perez, Sadam Ali and Terence Crawford before losing to Diego Magdaleno by a narrow margin of 12:13 in the final. In August of the same year he also started in the US Olympic qualification; with victories against Antton Slaughter and Mason Menard, as well as defeats against Sadam Ali and Miguel González, however, he missed the qualification. During his amateur days he also had five wins against the future professional world champion Omar Figueroa .

Professional career

The 1.75 m tall left arm has been boxing for the pros since 2008 and won 17 fights in a row. In March 2014 he defeated the IBO world champion Will Tomlinson (21-0) and in April 2014 boxed against Omar Figueroa (22-0) for the WBC lightweight world championship, but lost on points. In March 2015, he also lost on points to Miguel Vázquez (34-4). In January 2016 he defeated Valentin Golowko (21-0) on points.

In June 2016 he was narrowly defeated by Richard Abril (19-3).
