Richar "Richard" Abril (born August 10, 1982 in Cuba ) is a Cuban professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA lightweight.

Career

As an amateur boxer, he won 286 of 305 fights. He became Cuban Junior Champion in 1996, won the Playa Giron Cup in 1998, came second in the Guama Boxing Cup in 1999 and in 2000 also came second in the Team Cuba Tournament. Despite his impressive fighting statistics, he was never used in major international events, as he faced unbeatable competition in his weight class with Mario Kindelán (two-time Olympic champion, three-time world champion) and Enrique Carrión (world champion, two-time vice world champion). From 1999 to 2002 he took part in the Cuban championships in the elite class, where he was always eliminated before reaching the semi-finals.

He turned pro in the US in 2005 and remained undefeated in eleven fights. On June 27, 2008, however, he lost on points against Breidis Prescott and on January 22, 2010 on points against Henry Lundy . With five victories in a row against José Reyes from Puerto Rico, Miguel Ángel Munguía from Mexico, Julio Camaño from Panama, Sergio Rivera from Mexico and ex-WBA world champion Miguel Acosta , he got a WBA world title chance against on April 14, 2012 Brandon Ríos , but lost it extremely controversial on points. No fewer than 17 unofficial judges from trade magazines and boxing channels had seen Richard Abril the winner, including those from Ring Magazine and ESPN .

However, since Brandon Ríos had exceeded the lightweight limit, he was stripped of the title at the green table and awarded to Abril. This defended the title in an unclean fight on March 2, 2013 unanimously on points against the undefeated Sharif Bogere from Uganda.

On September 20, 2014, he defeated Edis Tatli on points. Since he had to cancel two more title defenses due to illnesses, the World Cup belt was withdrawn from him by the WBA Association in April 2015 and Darleys Pérez was named the new title holder.

In June 2016 he won against Jerry Belmontes .
