The Catholic Church of the Birth of Mary in Richen , a district of Eppingen in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1963/64 according to plans by Carl Herb .

history

A parish in Richen was not mentioned for the first time until 1496, but the place was already the mother parish for some surrounding places in the high Middle Ages. The patronage right over the old Marienkirche lay with the Lords of Gemmingen , but came to the Electoral Palatinate in 1549 , whose Reformation history the place then shared. After the Catholic church service was allowed again in the Electoral Palatinate from 1685, a Catholic pastor is again proven in Richen from 1699. When the church was divided in 1707, the parish of the place came to the Catholics, who in 1732/33 rebuilt the old church of the place, which had collapsed in 1692, in the center of the village. With the influx of Catholic expellees and refugees after the Second World War, the old church became too small, so that today's church, built in 1963/64 on the outskirts according to plans by Carl Herb from Nussloch, was moved into and the old church was then torn down.

The Pfälzer Katholische Kirchenschaffnei Foundation in Heidelberg supports the structural maintenance of the building.

description

The church is a simple concrete building with a low pitched roof and a free-standing, rectangular, flat-roofed, 28-meter-high bell tower. Concrete honeycombs with colored glass fillings form the windows of the nave and bell tower, and the sound openings of the bell tower are also clad with concrete honeycombs.

The colorful mosaics on the inner walls of the church, which depict the transfigured Christ and Mary with the child, were created by Franz Bernhard .

The only historical piece of equipment is a baroque font from the old Catholic church, in which the future Archbishop of Freiburg, Hermann Schäufele, was baptized on November 24, 1906 .
