Omar Figueroa junior (born December 13, 1989 in Weslaco , Texas ) is an American professional boxer of Mexican descent and former WBC lightweight world champion.

Boxing career

He started boxing at the age of six and was initially trained by his father. After only a short amateur career and participation in the National Golden Gloves 2007, he switched to the professional camp in 2008. He boxed as a professional only in the USA and is under contract with Golden Boy Promotions . In the first three years of his professional career, he remained unbeaten in 14 fights, but had no major opponent at his fists. Against Arturo Quintero (record: 15 wins - 4 defeats) he only reached one draw.

In his 15th fight in January 2012, he won early in the sixth round against the also undefeated Michael Angelo “The Artist” Perez (15-0). In his next fight in March of the same year, he defeated the former WBC youth world champion Juan Ramon Ayala Rodriguez alias Ramon Ayala (23-2) by knockout in the second round. After five more wins, he won on April 20, 2013 by knockout in the first round against Abner Cotto (16-0), cousin of the multiple world champion Miguel Cotto .

On July 27, 2013, he boxed in San Antonio for the WBC interim world championship against Nihito Arakawa (24-2) and won by unanimous decision. In January 2014, he was named a regular WBC world champion after title holder Adrien Broner rose to welterweight. In his first title defense on April 26, 2014 in California, he defeated Jerry Belmontes (19-3) on points. He was inferior to this five times in the amateur camp.

On August 16, 2014, he defeated Daniel Estrada (32-2) in another title defense. Due to a head injury sustained in combat, which prevented him from further fighting for several months, the WBC association withdrew his world title and declared Figueroa provisionally Champion in Recess . The new title holder was then Jorge Linares from Venezuela.

In May 2015 he won unanimously against Ricky Burns (37-4) and in December 2015 against Antonio DeMarco (31-5). After a year and a half break from the ring, he returned in July 2017 and defeated Robert Guerrero (33-5) by technical knockout in the third round. In July 2019 he lost on points to Yordenis Ugás (23-4).
