Jorge Luis Linares Palencia (born August 22, 1985 in Barinas ) is a professional boxer from Venezuela, former WBC world champion in featherweight, former WBA world champion in super featherweight and former WBC world champion in lightweight, as well as former WBA world champion in lightweight.
Since 2002 he has lived and trained in Japan . His older brother is former professional boxer Nelson Linares.
Career
As an amateur, he won 89 of 94 fights and was Junior Champion of Venezuela in 1999 and 2001. In 2002, at the age of 17, he moved to Tokyo and started his professional career under promoter Akihiko Honda of Teiken Boxing Promotions. He won his debut on December 15, 2002 in Osaka by knockout in the first round. He won his first 27 fights in Japan, Venezuela, Panama, Argentina and South Korea, 18 of them prematurely. Among them was the former WBA world champion Hugo Soto .
In his 28th professional fight on July 21, 2007 in Las Vegas , he defeated Óscar Larios prematurely in the tenth round and thus also won the vacant WBC Featherweight Championship. He defended the title on December 15, 2007 in Mexico by knockout in the eighth round against Gamaliel Díaz .
In his next fight on November 28, 2008 in Panama, which he already competed in super featherweight, he secured the vacant WBA world title by tKo in the fifth round against Whyber Garcia. Here, too, he won his first title defense on June 27, 2009 in Mexico by tKo in the eighth round against Josafat Perez. His second title defense ended on October 10, 2009 in Tokyo with a tKo defeat in the first round against Juan Salgado .
In 2010 and 2011 he won his four fights against Francisco Lorenzo, Rocky Juarez , Jesús Chávez and Adrian Verdugo. He then boxed on October 15, 2011 in Los Angeles against Antonio DeMarco for the WBC lightweight world title, but lost it in the eleventh round. He also lost his next fight in March 2012 prematurely to Sergio Thompson.
With six consecutive wins against mediocre opponents, he received another WBC world championship fight in the lightweight and won the vacant title in Tokyo by knocking out the Mexican Javier Prieto in the fourth round. In May 2015, he beat Kevin Mitchell early in the tenth round. In October 2015 he defeated Ivan Cano prematurely. In September 2016, he defeated Anthony Crolla and won his WBA title. He also won the rematch against Crolla in March 2017. In September 2017, he defeated Luke Campbell on points. In January 2018, he beat Mercito Gesta.
In May 2018 he lost prematurely to Vasyl Lomatschenko . After beating Abner Cotto, he lost to Pablo Cano in January 2019.
