Career

Kevin Mitchell won the English Featherweight Championships as an amateur in 2003 and then moved to the professional camp, where he celebrated his debut with a knockout win in the first round against Stevie Quinn. He was built up relatively slowly and boxed in the following six years mainly against build-up opponents , where he won some regional titles in super featherweight . In May 2006 he defeated in the second round Kirkor Kirkorow , who had become world champion in the amateurs in 1991. In September 2006 he won through TKo against the undefeated Belarusian Andrei Isaeu (record: 12-0). This was followed by early wins against Carl Johanneson (27-3) and Walter Estrada (34-5), the latter was the 2004 World Cup challenger to WBO title holder Scott Harrison .

His most important victory to date was achieved on December 5, 2009 in Newcastle with a unanimous point judgment against Breidis Prescott (21-1), who had defeated eventual world champions Richard Abril and Amir Khan in 2008.

With a record of 31-0, including 23 prematurely, he rose on May 15, 2010 in London against the Australian Michael Katsidis in the ring, who brought a record of 26-2 with 21 early wins and the interim world title of the WBO lightweight . Mitchell suffered a heavy defeat in front of the home crowd when he was badly beaten in the third round and taken out of the fight unable to defend.

In July 2011 he came back with an impressive win by TKo against the undefeated European champion John Murray (31-0) and received a WBO World Championship chance against the title holder Ricky Burns (34-2) on September 22, 2012 in Glasgow . Mitchell lost the duel after two knockdowns by the referee dropping out in the fourth round.

He then won six fights in a row, five of them prematurely. The defeated opponents included Marcos López (23-2), Ghislain Maduma (16-0) and Daniel Estrada (32-3). He was then able to compete against Jorge Linares (38-3) for the lightweight WBC world title on May 30, 2015 in London , but also lost this World Cup duel due to a severe swelling and cut injury over the left eye due to the referee dropping out in the tenth round . Both boxers had a knockdown in the course of the fight.

On December 12, 2015, he lost in London in the fight for the interim WBA World Championship against Ismael Barroso (18-0) by abandoning the fight in the fifth round after Mitchell had already suffered three knockdowns.
