Juan Díaz (born September 17, 1983 in Houston , Texas ) is an American professional boxer of Mexican descent and former lightweight world champion of the WBA , WBO , IBF and IBO associations .
amateur
As an amateur, Díaz had a record of 105 wins with only 5 losses. He won the Mexican championships in 1999 and the Mexican Olympic elimination in 2000, but was not allowed to go to the Olympic Games in Sydney due to his age of only 16 years.
professional
In 2000, at the age of 16, he became a professional boxer. He won his debut on June 23, 2000 by knockout in the first round against Rafael Ortiz (record: 7 wins - 3 losses). He also remained undefeated in his next 32 fights. On May 10, 2003 he won the World Youth Championship of the WBC by winning points against Eleazar Contreras (19-2) and defended the title against Francisco Lorenzo (18-1) and Joel Perez (34-6). After another win against Martin O'Malley (21-2), he boxed on July 17, 2004 in Houston for the WBA world title against Lakva Sim (19-3) and won by unanimous decision. He defended the title until November 2006 against Julien Lorcy (56-3), Billy Irwin (42-5), José Cotto (27-0), Randy Suico (24-2) and Fernando Angulo (18-3).
On April 28, 2007 he also won the WBO world title by an early win against the Brazilian Acelino Freitas (38-1). On October 13, 2007 he also received the IBF World Championship title through a tKo victory against Julio Díaz (34-3). He finally lost his three world championship belts on March 8, 2008 in Cancun, Mexico, by a narrow point defeat to the American Nate Campbell (31-5).
In September 2008 he won on points against Michael Katsidis (23-1), thereby receiving the IBO World Championship and boxing on February 28, 2009 in Houston against Juan Márquez (49-4) for the additional world titles of the WBA and WBO. In this aggressive and powerful fight, Díaz went down twice in the ninth round and was finally taken out of the fight by the referee. At this point it was balanced on points. So one judge had until then rated the fight as a draw, as well as one judge each for Díaz and Marquez. The bout was voted Bout of the Year by The Ring and the Boxing Writers Association of America.
In August 2009 he won on points against Paul Malignaggi (26-2), but lost the rematch almost three and a half months later himself on points. On July 31, 2010, he fought again in Las Vegas against Juan Marquez for the world title of the WBA and WBO, but lost unanimously on points.
