Shawn Porter (* 27. October 1987 in Akron , Ohio ) is an American professional boxer, former world champion of the IBF and former world champion of the WBC in the welterweight division .

Amateur career

He started boxing at the age of eight, won 276 of 290 fights as an amateur and won the National Silver Gloves , the National Junior Olympics , twice the National Junior Golden Gloves , the US U19 Championships and the Pan as a youth At the Cadets World Championships . In the elite middleweight division (adults), he won the 2007 National Golden Gloves and the World Golden Gloves Championships . Further successes in the elite class were second place at the US championships in 2006 and 2007, as well as third place at the US Olympic qualification in 2007 in Houston . His fight record also includes a victory against world champion Demetrius Andrade , as well as a defeat against Olympic champion James DeGale .

He was also a participant in the 2006 Junior World Championships in Agadir (quarter-finals) and the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro (round of 16, loss to Emilio Correa ). In 2008 he was a member of the US Olympic team for the Beijing Summer Games , but was not used.

Professional career

In October 2008 he signed his professional contract with Prize Fight Promotions and won his first fight by tKo in the first round against Norman Johnson (fight record: 1 win - 2 losses). After ten more build-up wins, nine of them prematurely, he defeated the also unbeaten New Yorker Jamar Patterson (8-0) by tKo in the fourth round in December 2009.

In the following eliminations he defeated Raúl Pinzón (17-4) and Ray Robinson (11-1), boxed for the NABF North American Championship on October 15, 2010 in Miami and won the duel by tKo in the ninth round against Héctor Muñoz (18-3).

On February 18, 2011, he fought at the first live TV-broadcast 3D boxing event against Anges Adjaho (25-4) and won the fight in Maryland unanimously on points. After a subsequent knockout victory, he also defeated the Mexican Alfonso Gómez (23-5) unanimously. His subsequent fight against former world champion Julio Díaz (40-8) ended in a draw in December 2012.

In May 2013 he was able to prevail unanimously on points against the Canadian Phil Lo Greco (25-0) and almost four months later defeated Julio Díaz in a rematch with unanimous points.

On December 7, 2013, he boxed in Brooklyn for the IBF World Championships, defeating title holder Devon Alexander (25-1) unanimously on points. In his first title defense on April 19, 2014 in Washington, he defeated Paul Malignaggi (33-5) by tKo in the fourth round.

On August 16, 2014, he lost the title by losing points to Kell Brook (32-0). A knockout win against Erick Bone (16-1) followed in March 2015. On June 20, 2015, he defeated Adrien Broner (30-1) unanimously on points. In the fight for the WBA welterweight championship on June 25, 2016, he lost on points to Keith Thurman (26-0). He won another win in April 2017 against Andre Berto (31-4).

On September 8, 2018, he defeated Danny García (34-1) in the fight for the WBC welterweight title. In March 2019 he won his first title defense on points against Yordenis Ugás (23-3). On September 28, 2019 he lost the belt by losing points to Errol Spence (25-0).
