geography

The small town is located in west Texas, 16 miles northwest of Sheffield, Texas at the intersection of State Highway 349 and US Highway 190 in a loop of the Pecos River .

history

After the Yates oil field in Pecos County was discovered in 1926, the oil company developing the oil field built a town in the immediate vicinity of the oil field to supply the workers. In 1927 the Ohio Oil Company built the town's infrastructure, and by 1930 the town's population was already 1,600.

Even before the establishment of Iraan, in 1926, about five kilometers south of the ranch of Ira Yates, a first oil workers camp, called Redbarn, was built. This camp, consisting mostly of tents, existed until 1952, when Yates donated half a square kilometer of land to the city of Iraan so that the city could develop further. In this context, the Redbarn camp was dissolved.

With the decline in oil production, the number of inhabitants fell to 951 in 1967. Due to the strong demand for oil in the 1970s and 1980s, the population of the town rose to 1,358 in 1986, after which the population fell from 1,322 in 1990 to 1,238 in 2000 Since then, the population has remained relatively constant and in 2010 was 1,229.
