Sheffield is an unincorporated community in Pecos County in the US state of Texas .

geography

Sheffield is located in west-west Texas 16 miles southeast of Iraan and 60 miles east of Fort Stockton at the intersection of US Highway 290, State Highway 349 and Farmroad 1217 at the eastern end of Pecos County. The place is 660 meters above sea level.

history

The area was first explored by the Spanish in 1590. Although there were several Spanish expeditions to the area over the next two centuries, no permanent settlement was established. The American Army first explored what would become Sheffield in 1849 when a road from San Antonio to El Paso was planned.

Settlement of the area did not begin until 1888, when the Cannon Ranch was founded along the Pecos River . In 1898 a post office was built, the first manager of which was Will Sheffield, after whom the later place was named. Around 1900 a small town had emerged on the land that belonged to Will Sheffield in the immediate vicinity of Cannon Ranch, which developed into the local supply center for the surrounding ranches.

With the discovery of the oil deposits of the Yates oil field in the Trans-Pecos region in 1926, the economic structure of the place changed. By connecting Sheffield to US Highway 290, the place became a stopover on the way to the oil fields near Iraan. The population grew from 124 in 1925 to 350 in 1949. In 1971 a natural gas field was developed near Sheffield. In 2000 the place had 600 inhabitants.
