In the American Civil War Fort Stockton was almost destroyed by General 1867 Edward Hatch rebuilt and the headquarters of the 9th US Cavalry. After the Apaches were defeated in this area in 1882, the government reduced the troops stationed there. Only two companies of the 16th Infantry remained.

After the troops withdrew, the proportion of civilians also decreased, which did not change until 1886 after joining the Texas and Pacific Railroad and the Southern Pacific Railroad .
