Saxton Pope

Saxton Temple Pope (born September 4, 1875 in Fort Stockton Texas , † August 8, 1926 ) was an American archer .

In 1973 he was inducted into the Archery Hall of Fame .

Life

He studied at the University of California , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1899 . On August 29, 1911, Ishi , the last Indian of the Yahi , fell into the hands of the whites. After Pope made the acquaintance of the Indian in 1912 and gained his trust, he was instructed by him in the Indian methods of hunting and bow-making.

After Ishi died, Pope and his friend Art Young went on various hunting trips to hunt for trophies , on which they hunted grizzly bears and other game , among other things . Together with Young, he pioneered modern bow hunting in the United States .

Pope died in 1926 after returning from Africa at a pneumonia .
