Keith Thurman (* 23. November 1988 in Clearwater , Florida ) is an American professional boxer and former world champion of the WBA and WBC in the welterweight division . He is ranked 3rd in the world by Ring Magazine (June 2019).

Amateur career

Keith Thurman started boxing at the age of seven and won 101 of 116 amateur fights, 76 of which were premature. His successes include six national championships, including the Junior Olympic National Championships and the National Police Athletic League Championships .

In the elite class (adults) he won a bronze medal in welterweight at the US championships in 2006 and 2007 and reached another third place at the US PanAm box-offs in 2007 in Colorado Springs . In international matches, he also beat the later Olympic participant Olexander Stretskii from Ukraine in 2006 and the Canadian champion Jonathan Bochner twice in 2007.

In the national Olympic qualification for participation in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , he won the silver medal in the welterweight division. He defeated Dominique Dolton and the 2004 military world champion Boyd Melson each by tKo and the reigning US champion Charles Hatley on points (23:14). In the final, however, he was defeated on points against Demetrius Andrade .

Professional career

In 2007 he switched to professional life and is under contract with Óscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions . His trainer is Dan Birmingham, who already looked after the two world champions Ronald Wright and Jeff Lacy , and was inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010 .

He won his first eight fights in a row by knockout in the first round, including against the until then undefeated Omar Bell (6-0). His fight against the Mexican Francisco García ended valueless in April 2009 after the fight ended due to an injury due to a collision of both athletes with the heads in the first round. This was followed by further victories against Stalinn Lopez (7-0), Favio Medina (23-2), Brandon Hoskins (16-0) and Orlando Lora (29-2).

In November 2012 he won by tKo in the fourth round against ex-world champion Carlos Quintana (29-3), the North American championship of the WBO in the light middleweight division. On March 9, 2013, he boxed welterweight against Dejan Zavec (32-2) for the WBO Intercontinental Championship and won by unanimous decision.

In July 2013 he boxed against Diego Gabriel Chaves (22-0) for the interime WBA World Championship and won by knockout in the tenth round. In December 2013, he managed to defend his title early through tKo in the ninth round against Jesús Soto Karass (28-8). In April 2014 he also won early against Julio Díaz (40-9).

In December 2014 he prevailed unanimously on points against Leonard Bundu (31-0). In January 2015 he was named the new welterweight world champion by the WBA. He won his first title defense on March 7, 2015 unanimously on points against Robert Guerrero (32-2). In July 2015 he defeated Luis Collazo (36-6) prematurely. In June 2016 he managed to defend his title on points against Shawn Porter (26-1).

On March 4, 2017, he also won the WBC world title by beating Danny García (33-0) on points, but resigned the title on April 24, 2018. In January 2019 he won another WBA title defense against Josesito López (36-7).

He suffered his first defeat on July 20, 2019, just on points against Manny Pacquiao (61-7).
