Carlos Quintana (* 6. November 1976 in Moca , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer and former WBO world champion in the welterweight division .

Boxing career

As an amateur, Quintana won some national championships in Puerto Rico, so that he was allowed to participate in the 1996 Olympic Games for Puerto Rico . As an amateur, Quintana had a record of 62 wins (48 by KO) in 70 fights.

In 1997 Quintana turned pro. After remaining unbeaten in 21 professional fights, he got the chance to fight the Argentinian Raul Eduardo Bejarano for the vacant WBO Latino welterweight belt in his home country of Puerto Rico in 2006. Bejareno went down on lap 10 after a hit from Quintana, from which he recovered again, but then took more hits. The fight was canceled, Quintana won by technical knockout.

In the following fight on June 24, 2006 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas against the Colombian Joel Julio Quintana fought for the WBC Latino welterweight belt and for the right to a welterweight title fight of the WBA . In this fight Quintana dominated with his boxing skills and clearly beat the powerful Julio on points.

On December 2, 2006, Quintana fought in Atlantic City against his compatriot Miguel Cotto , who had risen as WBO world champion from the super-lightweight , to the then vacant WBA welterweight world championship title. Quintana had problems with the faster Cotto and had to take many body hits in this fight. In the fifth lap, Quintana went down after a hit on the ribs, but was able to save herself during the break. Since he did not recover from this goal during the lap break, he gave up the fight.

Just a year later, Quintana had another chance to box for a world championship title. The then reigning WBO world champion Paul Williams was looking for a replacement after the injury-related cancellation of the intended opponent Kermit Cintron. Quintana showed good defensive skills in this fight and was able to defeat the previously undefeated champion on points.

The rematch against Paul Williams took place just four months later. Williams managed to knock Quintana down twice in the first round. The fight was then canceled and Williams was world champion again.

After the fight against Williams, Quintana rose to the super welterweight division. In this class he had won twice before the prospect of another world championship fight moved him to compete in the welterweight division again. On October 10, 2010 he met the WBC World Champion Andre Berto . Quintana had problems with the younger and faster Berto and lost the fight in the eighth round by technical knockout when the referee stopped the fight.
