Franco Giraldi (born July 11, 1931 in Comeno ) is an Italian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Giraldi, who comes from a family with Slovenian roots, was working as a film critic for the daily newspaper " L'Unità " when he gained his first film experience in 1955 as editing secretary for Giuseppe De Santis Uomini e lupi . In the following years he explored some types of cinematic activity; He worked for well-known directors as an assistant or helper, wrote some scripts from 1959 and was responsible for action and crowd scenes for the first time two years later as director of the second staff. In the classic spaghetti western for a handful of dollars , he staged two sequences and some exterior shots in Almería .

He stayed true to the genre Western on his debut as sole director - he chose Frank Garfield as the (then common English-sounding) pseudonym ; also in the follow-up film, the continuation of his first film The 7 Pistols of McGregor and in Rocco - the man with the two faces , was staged with a comedic undertone. After making a serious film of the genre, Giraldi turned to comedy, but made his most significant films for television. Based on a novel by Quarantotti Gambini , La rosa rossa was written in 1973 , which was then also used in cinemas; based on a story by Giani Stuparich Un anno di scuola four years later. He remained loyal to the medium of television with a few exceptions in the cinema (such as the ambitious film about the First World War from 1996, La frontiera ), and in the 1990s he also did a four-part series about Avvocato Porta and some crime films . In 2001 he made Voci based on a novel by Dacia Maraini . He was often his own screenwriter.

In addition to his cinema activities, Giraldi also shot numerous documentaries and worked at the theater.
