Diego Gabriel Chaves (born April 7, 1986 in San Miguel , Gran Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine professional welterweight boxer .

Amateur career

Chaves was 2004 South American Junior Champion and won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in 2005. He then took part in the 2005 World Championships in China, where he was eliminated in the first fight against István Szili . In 2006 he won the silver medal at the South American Games .

At the Pan American Games in Brazil in 2007, he won a bronze medal after being eliminated in the semifinals against Demetrius Andrade . He started at the 2007 World Championships in the USA, where he was eliminated in the second fight against Vitalie Grușac .

In 2008, his attempt to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing failed .

Professional career

He made his professional debut in July 2008 in Argentina. He won his first 22 fights, 18 of them prematurely. He won the Latin American championship of the world association WBO in the light middleweight and welterweight classes. In title defense, he also beat veterans Omar Weis and Jorge Miranda.

On July 21, 2012, he won the WBA interim welterweight championship, with a knockout victory in the second round against the Frenchman Ismael El Massoudi (record: 36-3). As a result, the WBA automatically took him to number 1 in its world ranking of challengers for the fight for the regular world title. In his second title defense on July 27, 2013 in San Antonio , he was knocked out in the tenth round against Keith Thurman (20-0).

In August 2014 he was disqualified in the fight against Brandon Ríos (31-2) in the ninth round. The fight was overshadowed by mutual unsportsmanlike conduct, the two boxers deducted points. At the time of the cancellation, Chaves was leading the judges' notes.

On December 13, 2014 he boxed a draw against Timothy Bradley (31-1) in Las Vegas . After early wins over Jorge Miranda (55-16), Luis Zarate (21-3) and Jean Prada (32-3), he lost prematurely to Jamal James (21-1) in December 2017.

Diego Chaves is the son of the former professional boxer Rudecindo "Rudy" Chaves (* 1947). Diego's brothers Ariel (* 1971), Carlos (* 1973) and Ismael (* 1969) are also former professional boxers.
