Professional career

After the Olympic Games, Kotelnik switched to the professional camp and signed a boxing promotion with the Hamburg boxing stable Universum . After 23 wins, he got the opportunity on October 21, 2004 against Souleymane M'baye in France an elimination match of the WBA association to contest the right to a world championship match. Kotelnik lost this duel against M'baye controversially on points. His second narrow and controversial defeat he had to accept nine months later in Nottingham against Junior Witter in the fight for the European light welterweight championship.

Subsequently, a duel against his stable colleague Muhammadqodir Abdullayev was scheduled by his promoter Universum . Kotelnik was able to prevail on points, Abdullayev then ended his career. On March 10, 2007 there was a rematch against Souleymane M'baye, who had meanwhile won the vacant WBA world title in Liverpool . The fight ended again controversially in a draw, which M'baye was able to defend his title. Due to the controversial verdict, however, Kotelnik remained on position one in the WBA world rankings and mandatory challenger.

M'baye lost the WBA title in his next fight to the British Gavin Rees , who then had to face Kotelnik. The fight took place on March 22, 2008 in Cardiff and was won by Kotelnik by technical knockout in the twelfth round. The first defense of the WBA World Championship he played on September 13, 2008 in his hometown of Lviv against the Japanese Norio Kimura. He won this fight by a unanimous point decision.

On February 7th, 2009 he defended his title in the Rostock town hall against the previously undefeated Argentinian Marcos René Maidana . He won just on points (115: 114, 115: 113, 113: 115). In his third defense of the title on June 18, 2009 in Manchester , however, Kotelnik lost the WBA title to Amir Khan , to whom he was subject over twelve rounds on points.

In May 2010, Kotelnik signed a three-year contract with the US promoter Don King . On August 7, 2010 he was defeated in Saint Louis by the WBC and IBF world champions Devon Alexander unanimously on points (112: 116, 112: 116, 112: 116). After a long period of inactivity, he finally ended his career in 2014.
