Román Martínez (* 31 January 1983 in Vega Baja , Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican professional boxer and former WBO world champion in the super featherweight division .

Professional career

Martínez was able to make his first seven professional fights victorious and boxed only a draw in his eighth fight. In 2006 he secured the WBO Latino Title and in 2007 both the WBO Inter-Continental Title and the WBO NABO Title . In 2009 he took the WBO world title from Briton Nicky Cook with a technical knockout victory in round 4. He defended this belt twice in a row and lost it to Ricky Burns in 2010.

In the following year he reported back with a TKo win over Daniel Attah and won the WBO Inter-Continental Title . In 2013 he competed against Juan Carlos Burgos for the world title of the WBO and could not win the title for the second time, since the fight ended in a draw.

In his next fight, which took place only three months later, he finally won the WBO title for the second time by beating Diego Magdaleno on points . He could not defend this belt, however, as he had to admit defeat Mikey Garcia in his next fight .

In April 2015 he prevailed after 12 rounds against Orlando Salido and secured the WBO world champion belt in super featherweight for the third time. The rematch against Salido five months later ended in a draw, so he kept the title.

On June 11, 2016, he was knocked out in the 5th round in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York against the up-and-coming Ukrainian Vasyl Lomatschenko .
