Jesse James Leija (born July 8, 1966 in San Antonio , Texas , USA ) is a former American boxer of Mexican origin in the super featherweight and normal boom . He was managed by Lester Bedford and trained by Ronnie Shields .

Boxing career

He didn't start boxing until he was 19 and has only played 28 amateur fights, of which he won 23. He was San Antonio Golden Gloves Champion and took part in the national Olympic qualification in 1988, where he lost to world champion Kelcie Banks .

In October 1988 he played his first professional fight, which he won by knockout in the first round. He remained undefeated in his first 30 fights, including a points win against world champion Louie Espinoza . He boxed against Azumah Nelson four times during his career. Their first meeting in September 1993 in San Antonio ended in a draw, in the rematch on May 7, 1994 in Las Vegas , Leija prevailed unanimously on points and thus also won the WBC super featherweight title. In the third fight in June 1996 Leija lost by tKo, in the fourth fight in 1998 Leija won again unanimously on points.

He suffered his first defeat in his first title defense of the WBC World Cup on September 17, 1994 in Las Vegas, when he lost to Gabriel Ruelas on points. After two wins against Jeff Mayweather (brother of boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. ) and Rodney Garnett, he boxed on December 15, 1995 in New York against Óscar de la Hoya for the WBO lightweight championship, but lost against him in the second Round after two downings.

After a few wins, including twice against Joel Perez, he received another World Cup chance on November 14, 1998 in Connecticut. He boxed against Shane Mosley for the IBF lightweight title, but lost again prematurely after several knockdowns. But then he was able to record some significant victories against Ivan Robinson , Fred Ladd and Micky Ward , whereupon he was again World Cup challenger. On January 19, 2003, he boxed in Australia for the world title of the WBC, IBF and WBA light welterweight against Kostya Tszyu , but lost by giving up his ring corner after the sixth round.

He played his last fight on January 29, 2005 in Atlantic City against WBC title holder Arturo Gatti , which he was defeated by knockout in the fifth round.
