history
The UAB Blazers teams were initially based in the Legacy Arena at Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex due to the lack of a hall of their own . In 1986 the construction of a sports hall began. On December 3, 1988, the then UAB Arena was inaugurated. On January 25, 1997, the hall was named after the basketball coach Gene Bartow (* 1930; † 2012). He was nicknamed "Father of UAB Athletics". Bartow was head coach at UCLA Bruins from 1975 to 1977 and then built the men's basketball department at UAB. At the same time he was also the team coach and sports director of the university. The arena's record attendance was recorded on February 16, 2008 with 9,392 spectators in a men's basketball game against Memphis. The hall is also used for university ceremonies such as graduation ceremonies . There are also concerts , lectures and appearances by celebrities such as US President Barack Obama , basketball player Michael Jordan and athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee .
On June 13, 2015, the two heavyweight boxers Deontay Wilder and Eric Molina met in the hall. In the world championship fight of the World Boxing Council (WBC) Wilder won by a knockout in the 9th round.
The World Games 2021 were awarded to the city of Birmingham. The Bartow Arena is said to be one of the venues.
