Sergei Wassiljewitsch Kuzmin ( Russian Сергей Васильевич Кузьмин ; born June 24, 1987 in Leningrad ) is a Russian boxer . He became the European super heavyweight amateur champion in 2010 .

Career

Sergei Kuzmin started boxing at the age of eleven. He is from St. Petersburg and is a member of the Dynamo sports association. He has been trained by WW Romanow and SN Kudriawzew.

He is not yet known to have any outstanding achievements in the junior sector (age group up to 18 years of age). It was not until he was 20 that he was ready to compete in major competitions. In 2007 he took part in the winter championship of Russian young boxers at the so-called "Championships of Olympic Hopes" and reached the final fight in the super heavyweight division. In 2007 he started a. a. also at the Popentschenko Memorial in Moscow and was defeated there in the semifinals by the then Russian master Islam Timursiev on points.

In 2008 he won the Popentschenko Memorial. He defeated there in the final battle Maxim Babanin from Russia on points. That year he also won a medal at the Russian super heavyweight championships. After defeating Maxim Babanin, he was defeated in the semifinals against Shamil Gadschiew on points (4: 8) and was third.

In 2009, Sergei Kuzmin made further progress. In the Russian championship, however, he had to be content with 3rd place again, because he was defeated in the semifinals against Nijaz Fajzulin just on points (8: 9). He was then allowed to compete in the elimination of the Russian Boxing Association for the 2009 World Cup in Milan, but lost to Denis Sergejew on points there.

In 2010, Sergei Kuzmin convinced the Russian coaches who used him at the European championship in Moscow in the super heavyweight division with several tournament victories . There he met in his first fight against the Olympic champion from 2008 and multiple world champion Roberto Cammarelle from Italy and defeated this just but deserved with 6: 3 techn. Points. After this sensational victory, he beat Yousef Abdelghani, Israel by breaking off in the 2nd round and in the final battle of the championship Viktor Sujew from Belarus on points (7: 3) and thus became the new European super heavyweight champion. After that he was also the 2010 Russian super heavyweight champion. He defeated Magomed Omarow (6: 3) in the semifinals and Vitaly Kuduchow in the final, each on points.

Sergej Kuzmin was not used at the 2011 European Championships in Ankara . Instead of him, Magomed Omarow was at the start, who surprisingly became European champion . But Sergei Kuzmin was again Russian champion in 2011. On the way there he won the semifinals over the newly crowned European champion Magomed Omarow on points (9: 5) and also beat Nijas Fajsulin on points (12: 7) in the final. He was then used at the World Cup that year in Baku . But he lost there in his first fight against Mohamed Arjaoui from Morocco on points (9:12) and only came in a disappointing 17th place.

In March 2012 he started at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) . He won this tournament with a point victory in the final battle over Zhang Zhilei from China . At the Olympic Games in London, however, Magomed Omarow was preferred to him.

In 2013, Kuzmin won the silver medal at the European Championships in Minsk . In the final he lost to Məhəmmədrəsul Məcidov , Azerbaijan .
