István Lévai

István Lévai (born July 23, 1957 ) is a former Hungarian boxer . Lévai was a silver medalist at the 1980 Olympic Games .

Career

Lévai was the first Hungarian heavyweight champion (+81 kg) in 1977 , a title he was able to achieve in 1978, 1979 and 1981-1983.

1979 Lévai first took part in the European Championships , but retired in the quarterfinals. In the same year, however, he won the Eastern Bloc police championships. In 1980 Lévai started at the Olympic Games in Moscow , which were boycotted by many countries in the western world . In these games he won the Olympic bronze medal after beating Anders Eklund, Sweden (4-1), and a semi-final defeat by Teófilo Stevenson , Cuba (5-0).

In 1981, 1983 and 1987 Lévai still took part in the European Championships , but was always eliminated in the quarter-finals. His opponents were Ulli Kaden , GDR (5: 0) in 1981 , Francesco Damiani , Italy (5: 0) in 1983 , and Alexandr Yagubkin, Soviet Union (3: 2) in 1987 .
