Janusz Gortat

Janusz Kazimierz Gortat (born November 5, 1948 in Brzozów ) is a former Polish boxer . He won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and 1976 in Montreal .

Gortat is the father of the former professional basketball player Marcin Gortat .

Career

Janusz Gortat started boxing in 1965. He was a member of the army and was a member of the Legia Warsaw Army Sports Club throughout his career, which lasted until 1982 . The coach he owed most of all was Henryk Niedzwiecki. In the Polish national relay, to which he belonged from 1970, he was trained by Felik's tribe. Janusz Gortat was an excellent technician who was particularly strong on the defensive.

He celebrated his first major successes in 1967. In that year he was Polish junior champion in the light middleweight division and has also been used in several junior international competitions. In 1969 he started for the first time in the Polish championship of the seniors and lost it in the middleweight division against Edmund Hebel . His first missions in the Polish national relay were two country matches in Cologne and Augsburg against the Federal Republic of Germany . On this occasion he defeated Hartmut Sasse and Uwe Laroche each on points.

In the years 1970 to 1972 Janusz Gortat was each Polish runner-up in the light heavyweight division. In these three years he lost in the final of this championship against Stanisław Dragan each on points. His career at international championships began in 1969 at the European championships in Bucharest . He started there in the middleweight division and won in the round of 16 over Nazif Kuran from Turkey on points. In the quarter-finals he met Mate Parlov from Yugoslavia , against whom he would still have to fight tough battles in his further career, and lost just 3-2 judges votes.

At the European Championships in Madrid in 1971 Janusz Gortat started in the light heavyweight division. He won there in the second round against Uwe Laroche by techn. KO in the 3rd round and in the quarter-finals over Imre Toth from Hungary on points, but lost again in the quarter-finals against Mate Parlov with 3-2 judges' votes.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , Janusz Gortat won his first international medal, the bronze. He won in Munich over Jaroslav Kral from Czechoslovakia clearly on points, won in the round of 16 over Raymond Russell from the United States just 3-2, and defeated Rudi Hornig from Germany in the quarterfinals by knockout in the first round. He only met Mate Parlov in Munich in the semi-finals and was defeated again on points. This time the judges scored 5-0 for Parlov.

At the European Championships in 1973 in Belgrade Janusz Gortat met Mate Parlov again in the final and again he had to admit defeat to him. The judges voted 5-0 for Parlov again. Before this final, Janusz Gortat had defeated Günter Peters from Germany and Sjeng Verstappen from their defeats on points. At the 1974 World Cup, which was held for the first time that year, Janusz Gortat was absent. He was at the European Championships in 1975 in Katowice again at the start, but failed there after a victory in the round of 16 over Gordon Feris from Ireland in the quarter-finals to Anatoly Klimanov from the USSR , who defeated him on points.

1976 Janusz Gortat took part in Montreal for the second time in the Olympic Games. He fought there in the light heavyweight division with a narrow 3-2 point win over Miloslav Popovic from Yugoslavia, a techn. KO victory in the third round over Georgi Stojmenow from Bulgaria and a 4-1 point victory over Juan Domingo Suarez from Argentina in the semi-finals, in which he met Leon Spinks from the United States. Leon Spinks turned out to be too strong for Janusz Gortat and clearly won with 5-0 judges' votes. Janusz Gortat won his second Olympic bronze medal in Montreal .

At the end of his international career, Janusz Gortat started again at the World Cup in Belgrade . He trained especially in the middleweight division . He won in Belgrade in a preliminary round match against the Cameroonian Yasel Kone and then lost in the round of 16 against the strong Soviet athlete Leonid Schaposhnikov by breaking off in the 2nd round.

Janusz Gortat always delivered open and very often balanced fights, in which, see his fights against Mate Parlov, he often had the judges against him. He would then certainly have won a title at an international championship that he never achieved.

In Poland, Janusz Gortat found a tough competitor in Pawel Skrzecz from 1977, who finally replaced him as the No. 1 Polish light heavyweight. He ended his career in 1982 after 317 fights, of which he had won 272. Janusz Gortat studied at the Sports University AWF while he was still active and graduated in 1972 as a certified sports teacher. From 1972 to 1994 he was a trainer at Legia Warsaw . His most successful students there were Andrzej Gołota and Tomasz Adamek .
