Leonid Shaposhnikov
Leonid Shaposhnikov (* 1950 ) is a Soviet boxer . He became European middleweight champion in 1977 .
Career
Leonid Shaposhnikov comes from Irkutsk in Siberia . He started boxing there as a teenager and became the Soviet junior champion (U 20) in 1970 in the light middleweight division . He joined the Red Army and became a member of an army sports club in Lvov .
In 1973 he reached the final in the light middleweight division of the Soviet championship, but could not compete in this because of an injury against Alexander Schipilow. At the European championship elimination tournament that took place shortly afterwards in Lvov, he then defeated Alexander Schipilow on points in the final battle. At the European Championships in 1973 he was not used. In 1974 he was then for the first time Soviet light middleweight champion with a points victory in the final over Viktor Kurischko. In the same year he won in Sofia at the 11th championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact States (SKDA championship) in the middleweight finals over Alexander Schipilow on points.
In the Soviet championship in 1975 Leonid Shaposhnikov lost in the light middleweight division in the round of 16 against Tjuljugasi Tursenkajew, a Kazakhs, with which he only finished 9th. He was still used in the 12th SKDA championship in Pyongyang in the middleweight division, but lost the final fight against Chang Bon Mun from North Korea on points. In 1976 he lost at the Soviet light middleweight championship in the semifinals against Alexander Shuravljew on points and got no chance to qualify for the Olympic Games.
In 1977 Leonid Shaposhnikov won his second Soviet championship title. In the middleweight division he defeated Vladimir Schin in the semifinals and Anatoly Klimanov on points in the final . He was then used at the European Championships in Halle (Saale) ). There he defeated Manfred Jassmann , Federal Republic of Germany (5: 0) and Slobodan Kačar , Yugoslavia (3: 2) on points, the Bulgarian Ilja Angelow by knockout in the 2nd round and in the final battle Bernd Wittenburg from the GDR on points (5: 0) and became European champion . Three months later he won the 13th SKDA Championship in Havana in the middleweight finals over his Soviet teammate Vladimir Shin on points.
He then won over the same boxer in the final battle of the Soviet championship in 1978. At the 1978 World Cup in Belgrade , he was then one of the favorites. He initially lived up to this assessment by defeating the strong Valentin Silaghi , Romania (5: 0) and Janusz Gortat from Poland by breaking off in the 2nd round. Then he met Slobodan Kacar in the quarter-finals, who, supported by the fanatical Yugoslav audience, came to a narrow 3-2 point win over Leonid Shaposhnikov. This remained with the 5th place without a medal.
Leonid Shaposhnikov ended his career at the end of 1978.
