Bernd Wittenburg
Bernd Wittenburg (born April 1, 1950 ) is a former German boxer . In 1975 and 1977 he was vice European middleweight champion of amateurs.
Career
Bernd Wittenburg started boxing as a teenager and was delegated to SC Dynamo Berlin due to his good performance in the national junior division. His trainer there was Horst Gülle. He was a member of the protection and security organs of the GDR.
In 1970 he finished the age of twenty in the "Friendship" tournament in Vidin / Bulgaria middleweight with a points victory over Djatschuk, USSR , the first place and in 1971 he arrived at the "fairness" tournament in Leipzig middleweight behind Anatoly Klimanow from the USSR and Hans-Joachim Brauske , GDR , on 3rd place.
In 1971 he took part for the first time with the seniors in the GDR championship and reached third place in the middleweight division behind Peter Urbach from SG Motor Görlitz and Hans-Jürgen Voigtländer from SG Wismut Gera . In 1972 he was then for the first time GDR middleweight champion with a victory in the final over Hans-Joachim Brauske , SC Chemie Halle . In the same year he also won the championship of the protection and security organs of the socialist states in Sofia in the light heavyweight division with a point victory in the final over Jozef Pietrzak from Poland . At the 1972 Olympics in Munich , however, it was not Bernd Wittenburg who was used, but Hans-Joachim Brauske, who was eliminated in the second round.
Also in 1973 Bernd Wittenburg won the East German middleweight championship. He defeated it in the final Wolfgang Heimann from SC Dynamo Berlin . At the European championship in 1973 in Belgrade , however, the loser of the GDR championship final, Wolfgang Heimann, was preferred to him again. This was eliminated in Belgrade in the quarter-finals.
In 1974 Bernd Wittenburg won his third East German middleweight championship with a victory over Eckhard Hadler from SC Traktor Schwerin. At the 1st World Championship in Havana he was then used in the middleweight division and won there with points over Eddie Johnson, Trinidad and Tobago and the like. Alejandro Montoya, Cuba and a K0 win in the 1st round over Carlos Anchaute, Peru a bronze medal . In the semifinals he suffered a bitter knockout defeat in the 1st round against Rufat Riskiev from the USSR .
In 1975 and 1976 Bernd Wittenburg won the GDR middleweight championship with victories over Wolfgang Donath, SG Wismaut Gera and Herbert Bauch , TSC Berlin . In 1977 he started in this championship in the light heavyweight division and lost it in the final against Ottomar Sachse from SC Chemie Halle (Saale) on points (1: 4).
In the international ring he was also successful in 1975, because he fought his way to the final at the European Championships that year in Katowice , in which he was defeated on points against the 1972 Olympic champion Vyacheslav Lemeschew . He was less successful at the Olympic Games in Montreal . He won his first middleweight fight over Bryan Gibson from Canada by knocking out the third round, but was defeated in the round of 16 against the Cuban Luis Felipe Martínez just on points (2: 3 judges' votes), which meant he was eliminated and only 9th place occupied.
In 1977 Bernd Wittenburg started for the last time in an international championship. He finished second in the middleweight division at the European Championships in Halle (Saale) . In the final he was defeated by Leonid Shaposhnikov from the USSR on points (0: 5).
