geography

Brzozów is located 38 km south of Rzeszów on the Stobnica River. The neighboring towns are Stara Wieś in the north-west, Przysietnica in the north, Humniska in the south-east, and Zmiennica in the south-west.

history

The first settlements are said to have existed as early as 166 during the time of the Roman Empire . First, in 1359, Casimir the Great founded a village in the local forest called Brzozowe ( brzoza - birch ). The town received its town charter only probably under Magdeburg law between 1386 and 1412 and was mentioned in a document as Bresen in 1388 and 1412 . This name could be an adaptation of the Polish place name Brzozów (1417 - Brosowa , 1419 - Latin Bresovia ; see also the story of Nowotaniec or Lobentanz , originally also called Brzozowa ) in the German language, because the first known city citizens often have names of German origin had. The old village northwest of the city was renamed Stara Wieś (old village). In 1657 the city was destroyed by acts of war.

During the first partition of Poland in 1772, the city came to Austria and became part of the crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria . Since the state restoration of Poland in 1918, it has belonged again to Poland. In 1880, 3,697 people lived in Brzozów. At the beginning of the 20th century, oil was discovered and extracted in the area. Medicinal springs were also discovered during this time. From 1939 to 1945 the place was occupied by the Wehrmacht. From 1975 to 1998 the village belonged to the Krosno Voivodeship . During this time she lost the status of a powiat ( district ) which she was given back in 1999.
