The Friisk Foriining (German: Friesischer Verein or Vereinigung ) is a cultural association of the Frisian ethnic group in North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein .

history

The Friisk Foriining was founded in 1923 as the Frisian-Schleswig Association , one of whose co-founders was the writer Wilhelm Ludwig Andresen , as a counterpoint to the German-nationally oriented North Frisian Association . The Frisian-Schleswig Association saw the North Frisians as an independent people and demanded recognition as a national minority . At the same time, the club's name indicated a proximity to the umbrella organization of the Danish South Schleswig Association (the Schleswig Association, today the South Schleswig Association ), with whom the association worked in many areas, so that it was partly understood as Danish-oriented. In 1924 the Frisian-Schleswig Association joined the Association of National Minorities in Germany and was a permanent member of the European Nationality Congress from 1925 to 1938 . While the association took part in local elections in 1925 with an independent Friesland list , after the Second World War it helped found the South Schleswig voter association. In order to clarify the self-image as an independent nation, the association has been an association of the National Frisians since 1934 . The club name was changed in 1948 to North Frisian Foriining for nationale Frashe and again in 1975 to Foriining for nationale Friiske . In 2003 the association finally renamed itself Friisk Foriining .
