North Frisian Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The North Frisian Association is a cultural association of the Frisian ethnic group in the district of North Friesland in Schleswig-Holstein .

The North Frisian Association was founded in the imperial era under the name "North Frisian Association for Local Lore and Home Love". Especially in the context of the referendum in Schleswig and the German-Danish conflict that followed, the association acted as an association of those North Frisians who saw the North Frisian language and culture under the umbrella of German and understood the Frisians as a German tribe . This differentiated them from the North Frisians, who viewed the Frisian culture as independent and emphasized the historical connection with Denmark. After Nordfriesland remained with Germany in 1920, they founded the Frisian-Schleswig Association in 1923 , which sought to recognize the Frisians as a national minority . The contrast between these two associations continues to this day, but only plays a subordinate role.

The North Frisian Association has existed since August 13, 1902 and is divided into several local associations. One focus of the association is the maintenance of customs . In the year it was founded, the association published the first North Frisian yearbook . The North Frisian Yearbook has been published together with the Nordfriisk Instituut since 1965 .

Like most North Frisians and favored by the national German position in the German-Danish conflict, the North Frisian Association initially had a positive attitude towards the national socialist ideology. However, resistance arose against the threat of conformity and after the association was finally integrated into the Nazi cultural community under the name “Heimatbund Nordfriesland” and became a National Socialist institution, most of the influential members resigned. After the Second World War , the association was able to be re-established.

Together with Friisk Foriining and representatives of the “ Verein Nordfriesisches Institut ”, the Eiderstedt landscape , the Helgoland community and Öömrang Ferian , the North Frisian Association is organized in the North section of the Frisian Council .
