Dawit Kwachadze

Dawit Kwachadze (born December 25, 1951 in Tbilisi ) is a former Soviet boxer of Georgian descent. He became European light heavyweight champion in 1977 .

Career

Dawit Kwachadze started boxing as a teenager in Tbilisi. He was a member of Burewestnik Tbilisi throughout his career . "Burewestnik" was the sports organization of universities and colleges in the Soviet Union. At a height of 1.80 meters, he weighed around 80 kg as an adult and boxed in the light heavyweight division.

The first result known to him comes from the Soviet championship in 1974. There he was eliminated in the round of the last "32" against Yuri Chitalkin and therefore only finished 17th. In 1975 he reached the quarter-finals in this championship, where he lost to Juri Bystrow on points and therefore ended up in 5th place. As early as 1976 he succeeded for the first time to become Soviet light heavyweight champion, where he beat Viktor Yegorov on points in the final. At the Olympic Games in Montreal that year , however, he was not used.

In 1977 Dawit Kwatschadze was again Soviet champion with a points win in the final over Viktor Erofejew and then started at the European Championships in Halle (Saale) . He came there to a disqualification victory in the first round of Fred Serres, Luxembourg , to cessation victory in the second round of Rauno Pelli Matikainen, Finland and in the final battle to a point victory over (5 0 Richter votes) Ottomar Sachse from of the GDR and became European champion .

At the Soviet championship in 1978 Dawit Kwachadze could not defend his title, because he lost in the final against Anatoly Klimanov on points and in 1979 he was not Soviet champion, because he lost that year against the Lithuanian Algirdis Jancauskas on points and came up with the 3rd place. In 1980, however, he managed to become Soviet champion for the third time. He defeated it in the final Vladimir Shin on points. He was also at the Olympics in Moscow used. In the light heavyweight division he won it in his first fight over Andrew Straughn from Great Britain by breaking off in the 2nd round. In the quarterfinals he lost to Slobodan Kačar from Yugoslavia after Punkgen (1: 4) and was eliminated. Kacar then also became Olympic champion .

Then Dawit Kwatschadze ended his boxer career.
