Pablo Romero
Pablo Romero (* 1961 ) is a former Cuban boxer . He was world champion of the amateurs in 1982 and 1986 in the light heavyweight division.
Career
Pablo Romero is only known to have started boxing as a teenager and later to join the army.
His boxing successes began in 1979 at the age of 18. This year he started at the important boxing tournament of the Cuban boxing association "Giraldo Córdova Cardín" in Havana with the seniors and finished in the middleweight division behind world champion José Gómez Mustelier and Ventura Donatien, bde. Cuba , 3rd place. In 1980 he was also third in the Cuban championship behind José Gómez Mustelier and Alejandro Montoya.
In 1981 Pablo Romero had to take a break due to an injury. From 1982 he started always in the light heavyweight division. This year he was also the first Cuban champion with a victory over Ricardo Rojas and also took first place at the "Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín" tournament in Guantánamo with a victory in the final over Ildefonso Lugo. This cleared the way for him to start at the World Championships in Munich . He won there after a bye over Danny Lindström from Canada , Valeri Shin from the USSR (4-1 point win) and Pawel Skrzecz from Poland (5-0) and became world champion for the first time .
In 1983, Pablo Romero surprisingly lost to Julio Quintana Martínez on points at the Cuban Championship in the final battle and therefore only finished 2nd. For this defeat he returned the favor at the Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín tournament in Santiago de Cuba . He defeated here Julio Quintana Martínez on points and was then used at the Pan American Games in 1983 in Caracas . In the final of this championship he came to a clear point victory over the later long-time professional world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield from the United States. In 1983 Pablo Romero also won the so-called AIBA Challenge Match in Tokyo over the American Rick Womack on points (4: 1), against whom he then clearly lost on points (0: 5) in the North American Championship in Houston .
In the Olympic year of 1984 Pablo Romero won the Cuban light heavyweight championship for the second time with a victory in the final battle over Julio Quintana Martínez. He repeated this success in the years 1985 to 1988. In 1985 he defeated Benjamin Luperon and in the years 1986 to 1988 Orlando Despaigne three times in a row on points. In 1989 he lost in the final fight of the Cuban championship against Orlando Despaigne, who was also his successor in the international boxing ring. With another point victory over Julio Quintana Martínez at the "Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín" tournament in Sancti Spíritus , Pablo Romero won the right to start at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . But he couldn't start there because Cuba boycotted these Olympic Games. At the substitute event for the boycotting countries in Havana , the so-called friendship tournament, he took first place with victories over Stanislaw Lakomiec , Poland (5: 0), Milan Picka, ČSSR (5: 0) and Valeri Shin , Soviet Union ( 4: 1). However, this success could not replace a possible Olympic victory. Towards the end of 1984, Pablo Romero lost to Rick Womack in the AIBA Challenge Match in Los Angeles by breaking off the first round.
In 1985 there were no major international championships such as World Championships or Olympic Games. At the championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact and friendly nations in Bydgoszcz , Pablo Romero won over Naphan Gaman from Syria by breaking off in the 2nd round and over Daniel Stantien from the ČSSR by breaking off in the 3rd round, but had to fight against Vitali Kaschanowski there in the final from the USSR beaten on points and only reached 2nd place.
1986 Pablo Romero lost in a preparatory tournament for the World Championships at the Grand Prix in Ústí nad Labem in the final battle against Markus Bott from the Federal Republic of Germany on points. At the World Championships in Reno , however, he was back in top form and became world light heavyweight champion for the second time . In his first fight there he had to fight hard against René Suetovius from the GDR , before he won against him with a 3-2 judge's vote. His other victories were clearer: points victory over John Beckles, England (5: 0 judges' votes), points victory over Damir Skaro , Yugoslavia (5: 0) and in the final battle points victory over Loren Ross , USA (4: 1).
In 1987 Pablo Romero was again winner of the Pan American Games in Indianapolis . He beat Brent Kosolofski from Canada on points, Andrew Maynard from the United States by canceling in the 2nd round and Nelsom Adams from Puerto Rico by canceling in the 3rd round. At the North American Championships in Toronto in 1987 he won the final over Brent Kosolofski by knockout in the 2nd round. However, he suffered a defeat at the World Cup in Belgrade , where he lost on points in the semifinals against Yuri Waulin from the USSR and therefore only came in 3rd place.
In 1988 Pablo Romero fought for the "Giraldo Cordova Tournament" in Las Tunas with a point victory over Orlando Despaigne again the right to participate in the Olympic Games of that year in Seoul . He could not start there either, because Cuba boycotted these games at the behest of Fidel Castor for reasons that are inexplicable today. It was the second time that he fell victim to politicians' intrigues. So Pablo Romero had to be content with a victory at the Central American & Caribbean Championships in Guatemala City in 1988 , where he defeated Noe Chaion from Guatemala by knockout in the first round.
After Pablo Romero had lost to Orlando Despaigne at the Cuban championship in 1989 , he beat this at the "Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín" tournament in Pinar del Río and thus secured the starting place at the World Cup in Moscow . In Moscow he won the light heavyweight division against John Pettersson from Sweden by breaking off in the 1st round, defeated Meldon Orr from Australia by breaking off in the 3rd round and also got a demolition victory in the 1st round over Sandor Hranek from the CSSR . In the final he met the 1988 Olympic middleweight champion Henry Maske from the GDR, who had moved up a weight class and lost against him, in the meantime the point machines had been introduced with 11:18 hits on points. This made him runner-up in his third participation in world championships .
Immediately after this world championship, Pablo Romero ended his career as an active boxer.
