Carl Emil Uphoff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Emil Uphoff (born March 17, 1885 in Witten ad Ruhr; † August 21, 1971 in Worpswede ) was a German painter and writer who worked in the Worpswede artists' colony .

Life

The brother of the Worpswede painter Fritz Uphoff and brother-in-law of the painter Lore Schill received his training first in the so-called Folkwang circle from Christian Rohlfs , and later on study trips to Belgium, Holland and France. In Paris he was promoted by Henri Matisse . In 1911, together with his younger brother Fritz, he founded the Worpswede work group with the aim of reforming book illustration in the sense of a total graphic work of art.

In the course of the 1920s, Uphoff transformed from a staunch communist to a staunch National Socialist. Alongside Fritz Mackensen, he was a driving force behind the “alignment” of the colony. In 1934 Uphoff Ortswart became part of the NS community Kraft durch Freude . In the NSDAP he made it up to the district head office and in the Nordic Society he was a councilor. After 1945 he was classified as a “fellow traveler”, which meant that he was only deprived of eligibility for public office for two years. He stayed in Worpswede.

Carl Emil Uphoff was (like his brother Fritz) a member of the German Association of Artists .
