Charles Mayer (boxer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles Mayer was an American boxer and Olympic middleweight champion in 1904 and a heavyweight silver medalist at the same games. This makes him one of only five boxers in Olympic history who competed in two weight classes.

The 3rd Summer Olympics in 1904 in St. Louis were the first in which boxing competitions were held. Only Americans participated, although foreigners would have been eligible. Only two boxers were registered in the middleweight division, so the competition consisted only of the final, which Mayer won by knockout against Benjamin Spradley . In the heavyweight division, only three boxers were registered, with Mayer facing the winner of the semi-final, Samuel Berger . He finally lost to his opponent, who was over ten kilograms heavier, on points. He only needed one victory for his Olympic gold and silver medal.

In 1905 Mayer, who started for a New York club, won the silver medal at the US championships in Boston and in 1906 the bronze medal at the US championships in San Francisco .
