René Jacquot (born July 28, 1961 in Toul , Meurthe-et-Moselle ) is a former French professional boxer. He is a former French champion, European champion of the EBU and world champion of the WBC in the light middleweight division.

Career

René Jacquot started professional boxing in 1983 and had a mixed record of 13 wins, 9 defeats and one draw by 1987. His successful career finally began in January 1987 with a points win against the undefeated Jean-Paul Roux (16-0). In his next fight in April he was able to win the French championship by knocking out Yvor Segor. Four more victories followed, including against ex-Benelux champions John van Elteren and Miodrag Perunović , who had become European and vice-world champions among other things.

In January 1988 he defeated the reigning European champion Luigi Minchillo (55-4) prematurely in the fourth round in Italy. He then defended the EBU title won in this way by knockout against the Belgian Eric Taton and the German Erwin Heiber, and on points against Romolo Casamonica (23-0). For 1988 he was also awarded by the Académie des sports .

In February 1989 he was able to unanimously defeat the American Donald Curry (31-2) in Grenoble in the fight for the WBC World Championship on points and thus became France's first boxing world champion in 30 years. The fight was voted the surprise of the year by Ring Magazine . However, he lost the title in the first defense fight in July 1989 to John Mugabi (33-2). He fell so badly on the first lap after falling down that he had to give up the fight due to a foot injury.

After two build-up wins, he came in 1990 to two World Championship fights for the titles of the WBC and IBF , but lost on points against Terry Norris (25-3) and Gianfranco Rosi (49-3). Then he ended his career.
