Enrique Regüeiferos Blanco (born June 15, 1948 in Santiago de Cuba , † June 20, 2002 ibid) was a Cuban boxer . He was winner of a silver medal in the light welterweight at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City .

Career

Enrique Regüeiferos comes from near Santiago de Cuba. It was in this city that he started boxing at the age of eight. He developed very quickly and won the Cuban championship title in the senior featherweight division with a victory over Osvaldo Rivera in 1964 at the age of 16. He then enjoyed the special promotion of the legendary Cuban boxing trainer Alcide Segarra. Enrique Regüeiferos was a left sender, which means the right hand was his flapping hand. But he became famous for his excellent left hook, with which he decided many fights alone.

He also won the Cuban lightweight championship title in 1965, 1966 and 1967. He defeated Roberto Chappo on points in the final fights. In 1967 he won his first international title. He was in Winnipeg winner of the Pan American Games in the lightweight. He won over Gerald Ratte, Canada by knockout in the 2nd round and against Ronnie Harris , USA a . Luis Minami from Peru on points.

In 1968 he was not at the start because of the preparation for the Olympic Games at the Cuban championship. In an international match in Halle against the GDR , he won over Peter Tiepold by disqualification in the third round. At the subsequent Olympic Games in Mexico City, Enrique Regüeiferos started with great expectations in the light welterweight division. He lived up to these expectations, because he defeated Terry Waller from England in the 1st round by knockout, Antoniu Vasile from Romania in the 2nd round by techn. KO, the favorites Yevgeny Frolow from the Soviet Union and James Wallington from the United States on points and thus faced the experienced Jerzy Kulej from Poland in the final battle . After a balanced fight, the judges decided with 3: 2 votes for Kulej and Enrique Regüeiferos received the silver medal. He was the first Cuban boxer ever to win a medal at the Olympic Games.

In 1968 Enrique Regüeiferos won the big international boxing tournament of the Cuban boxing association Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Havana, the light welterweight competition with a victory in the final over his compatriot Lázaro Alfonso. He repeated this success in 1969 and 1970. In 1969 he won the final over Reinaldo Hernández and in 1970 over Emilio Correa . In 1970 he was also at the 11th Central American and Caribbean Games in Panama City at the start. There he defeated Clarence Forbes from Jamaica and Luis Mendoza from Puerto Rico on points and won in the final battle over the Panamanian Ferrer by knockout in the first round.

While he was absent from the Cuban championships in 1971, he won again at the 4th Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Havana. In the final he beat his compatriot Heleodoro Stable. He repeated then in Cali at the Pan American Games his success from Winnipeg and won it in the light welterweight in the final fight over Jose Vasquez from Colombia on points.

In the 1972 Olympic year, Enrique Regüeiferos was again Cuban light welterweight champion with a points win over Heleodoro Stable. At the 5th Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Havana, however, he started in the lightweight. He won this tournament with a final victory over his compatriot Orlando Palacios. He then appeared at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, not unexpectedly, also in the lightweight. Obviously he was weakened by the "weight gain", because he lost in the first round against the German champion Peter Hess on points and was eliminated from the tournament.

In 1973 Enrique Regüeiferos took a break. But after the first world championships for amateur boxers took place in Havana in 1974 in Havana, he was back at the start this year and again won the 7th Giraldo Córdova Cardin light welterweight tournament. At the World Cup in Havana, however, fate overtook him again in the first round, because he lost to Mario Rafael Ramos from the cathedral. Rep. By KO in the 3rd round. After this defeat he resigned.

After boxing

After boxing, Enrique Regüeiferos lived in a small house on the outskirts of Havana. He soon developed cancer, could no longer work and became completely impoverished. Only his old mother looked after him until his early death at the age of 54. The Cuban state, from which he received no support, and the Cuban people had forgotten him.
