Yevgeny Vasilyevich Frolov
Evgeni Wassiljewitsch Frolow ( Russian Евгений Васильевич Фролов ; born June 14, 1941 in Moscow ) is a former Soviet boxer . He won at the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo a silver medal in the light welterweight .
Career
Yevgeny Frolov began boxing as a teenager in Moscow. He belonged to the sports club Trud , later Spartak Moscow . With a height of 1.77 meters he fought as an adult in the light welterweight, the weight class up to 63.5 kg body weight.
In 1961 he first took part in the Soviet senior championship and reached the semi-finals there, where he lost on points against Gennady Churnayev. In 1962 he was the first Soviet champion and defeated the defending champion Aloizs Tumiņš on points in the semifinals . In the final he defeated Yevgeny Scherznew. In 1963 he was absent from the Soviet championship and in 1964 he was defeated in the final against Vladimir Karimov just on points. In the preparatory courses for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, however, he convinced the coaches so much that they gave him preference over Karimov. In Tokyo, Evgeni Frolow defeated the light welterweight Brian Mansell from New Zealand by knockout in the 2nd round and Charley Ellis from the United States just on points (3: 2 judges' votes). Then he came to a fightless victory over the injured Vladimir Kucera from the CSSR and a clear point victory over Habib Galhia from Tunisia (5-0) and was in the final against Jerzy Kulej from Poland . Kulej dominated this fight and won with 5-0 judges votes unanimously on points. Yevgeny Frolov won the silver medal .
In the years 1965 to 1969, Yevgeny Frolov then won the Soviet championship five times in a row. He defeated it Vladimir Karimov, Valeri Frolow , Yuri Polyakow, Gurgen Sajadjan and again Valeri Frolow each on points.
In 1965 he also competed in the European Championships in Berlin . He won there first over Willem Gerlach from the Netherlands by techn. KO in the 2nd round and via Reinhold Flor from the Federal Republic of Germany on points. In the quarterfinals he met Jerzy Kulej and was defeated by this again on points. He was eliminated and remained with the 5th place without a medal.
At the European Championships in 1967 Yevgeny Frolov was not used. But he started again in 1968 at the Olympic Games in Mexico City . There he won points over Ray Maguire from Australia (5: 0) and Issaka Babore, Nigeria (4: 1), but lost to Cuban Enrique Regueiferos just on points in the quarterfinals (2: 3 judges' votes). He did not get into the medal ranks and took 5th place.
After that he did not contest any more international championships.
