Clinton Jackson (born May 20, 1954 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is a retired American boxer .

Career

amateur

Jackson was four-time American champion, 1974-76 welterweight (-67 kg) and 1977 light middleweight (-71 kg). 1974 and 1975 also became North American champions.

At the 1974 World Championships , Jackson won the silver medal after defeating Mike McCallum , Jamaica , and Zbigniew Kicka , Poland , and losing to Emilio Correa , Cuba in the final . For this defeat Jackson was able to retaliate at the Pan American Games in 1975 when he beat Correa in the semifinals (4-1). After beating Kenneth Bristol, Guyana (5-0) in the final , Jackson won the gold medal. At the 1976 Olympic Games , he was one of the favorites in the race and easily reached the quarter-finals. Here he met the later silver medalist Pedro Gamarro , Venezuela , to whom he was defeated with 3: 2 judge votes.

professional

In 1979 Jackson turned pro, but never achieved the same level of success as when he was an amateur. He lost to every major opponent, such as B. James Shuler , Sumbu Kalambay, and Buster Drayton . In 1985 Jackson ended his career.

Others

Jackson worked as an assistant sheriff for some time . In 1989 he was charged with kidnapping and blackmail and sentenced to life in prison. The outcome of his last probation hearing in 2011 is not known.
