Nicholas James George (born September 25, 1982 in Manchester , Greater Manchester ) is a British basketball player . After studying in the United States , George played as a professional, particularly in Italy . Most recently he was active with the Lugano Tigers in the Swiss National Basketball League until 2012 . With the British national team , George took part in the 2009 European Championship finals .

Career

After George had been active for various youth and junior selection teams of the English basketball association, he went to study in the USA at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 , whose college team Rams then played in the Colonial Athletic Association of the NCAA . Under coach Jeff Capel III, George reached together with Domonic Jones after a second place in 2003 the championship of this conference in 2004 and the qualification for the national final round of the NCAA , in which one, however, against the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest University in the first round with just one point Difference ruled out. In the following year, another conference runner-up succeeded together with Jamal Shuler , which was not enough to qualify for the final round. In the Rams' all-time leaderboard, George is in the top ten for points and rebounds .

After graduating, George did not make the leap into the highest endowed US professional league NBA and in 2006 he signed a contract with the Italian champions from Treviso . Here, however, he could not prevail and after a good three months in January 2007 moved to the second Italian league LegADue for the Andrea Costa club from Imola . Here he got significantly more game shares, but the club ended the season in penultimate place in the table and was only able to keep the class thanks to the withdrawal of other clubs' licenses.

In the following season 2007/08 George played for the Spanish first division relegated CB Lucentum from Alicante , who took second place in the second Spanish league LEB Oro in the final table and narrowly missed promotion in the promotion play-offs . The following season George began with the French first division club BCM Gravelines on the English Channel , where he only stayed until mid-December 2008.

In December 2008 George moved again to the Italian second division. He stayed with Junior Libertas from Casale Monferrato beyond the end of the season. After each fourth place in the final table, they missed qualifying for the top class in 2009 and 2010 against the respective winner of the promotion play-offs. After the 2012 Olympic Games were awarded to the British capital, London , a British national team had meanwhile been formed which, as host, should have automatic start rights at the Games. In 2008, George was also appointed to this selection and was able to qualify for a European Championship finals for the first time. At the European Championship finals in 2009 , however, George was hardly used in the three games of the first round, all of which were lost to the later semi-finalists Slovenia , Spain and Serbia .

In the 2010/11 season George had to sit out completely due to knee problems, while his club Junior Casale managed to move up to Serie A. In the 2011/12 season he dared a comeback with the Italian second division promoted Sant'Antimo , which he left after only nine appearances in championship games in January 2012. In March 2012 he joined the Swiss champions Lugano Tigers in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino . With this club he was able to defend the championship and was appointed to the provisional Olympic squad of the British national team. After another injury, however, his chance of participating in the Olympic Games was gone. In 2013 he made a " comeback " with the Giants from his native Manchester in the British Basketball League . Soon after the start of the season, however, left the team and joined the league rivals Raiders from Plymouth .
