Legadue , also spelled LegADue , was the second highest Italian division in basketball . The league was led by the organization of the same name, whose headquarters were in Bologna , in cooperation with the national association Federazione Italiana Pallacanestro . The league itself was therefore officially referred to as 'Campionato di Legadue' (literally translated: Championship of LigaZwei ) because of the similarity of names, but this distinction was not common in linguistic usage. The league was founded in 2001 and then replaced the A2 series . During that period he named the top flight Serie A1 in Lega Basket Serie A in order.
After the 2012/13 season, the game was stopped in the Legadue, as this league was replaced by the Divisione Nazionale A Gold .
mode
In their first season 2001/02 fourteen teams competed in the main round. The first eight teams determined a promotion to Serie A in play-offs . The two last-placed teams were relegated, at that time still to Serie B. In the following season, both play-off finalists rose, as Virtus Bologna from Serie A was excluded. In the third season of 2003/04, the first place in the main round was directly entitled to promotion, while the play-offs between the teams in second to ninth place played off another promoted team. In the 2004/05 season the league was expanded to sixteen teams and a separate league cup was also played. This mode was then retained until the 2010/11 season. Since the 2010/11 season there was again only one sporting climber, so that the first in the main round had to qualify again via the play-offs.
history
Series A2 (1974 to 2001)
The predecessor of LegADue was Serie A2, which was founded in 1974 below Serie A, henceforth called Serie A1, and brought together teams from the previously three-pronged Serie B. The regular fourteen-team league was recently not very attractive in terms of sport or economy, so that in the last two seasons 1999 to 2001 only eleven and ten teams respectively took part in the game.
LegADue (since 2001)
The newly founded second highest division was then economically more successful as a result. This appeal was also mirrored reflected that participating clubs alongside US players who had played first class in other European countries, national team could undertake from Northern and Eastern European countries. Among them were the German national players Misan Nikagbatse (between 2004 and 2009) and Sven Schultze (2009 to 2010) as well as the Austrian national player Benjamin Ortner (2007/08). But even in this league, participating clubs went bankrupt . Due to withdrawals and exclusions of clubs, including from Serie A, seldom had both athletic relegated members of a season actually relegated; mostly at least one club could obtain a license to stay in the league that had become free. In the 2010/11 season alone, three clubs with the Basket Rimini Crabs , Snaidero Udine and Pallacanestro Ferrara had to file for bankruptcy, and after the season there was a voluntary withdrawal of UC Casalpusterlengo . Nonetheless, there were again sixteen teams for the 2011/12 season, which were reduced to fifteen after Umana Venezia was upgraded to Serie A.
After the 2012/13 season, the basketball leagues in Italy were realigned from the second-highest league down to the fifth-highest league. As a result, the Divisione Nazionale A Gold is now the second highest Italian division in basketball, the Legadue as such no longer exists.
