Sven Schultze (born July 11, 1978 in Bamberg ) is a former German national basketball player .

life and career

Club career

Sven Schultze learned to play basketball in the youth of his home club TTL Bamberg . In the 1995/1996 season, at the age of 17, he played for the first time in the 1st basketball league for Bamberg. He was also equipped with a double license and also played the 1995/1996 season at TSV Breitengüßbach in the 2nd division.

In the summer of 1998 he moved to the top German team Alba Berlin , with whom he won three championship titles in the following years. Again he was equipped with a double license, but he played mainly for the cooperation partner TuS Lichterfelde Berlin in the 2nd Bundesliga, with which he was promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in 2000.

From the 2000/2001 season he played exclusively for Alba Berlin. In the summer of 2002 he moved from Berlin to Bayer Giants Leverkusen , where he was hoping for more playing time. And in fact, with convincing performances, he developed into a top performer in the team.

When Leverkusen failed to make it into the Bundesliga play-offs , he surprisingly received an offer from the injured top team Olimpia Milano from Serie A. Schultze performed so well in the Italian play-offs that his contract was extended.

After a one-year stay in Italy, Schultze moved to Olympia Larisa in Greece for the 2008/09 season . There he played until February 2009 and then moved back to Italy and was in the play-offs of the second division for Casale Monferrato on the field. In October 2009 Schultze signed a contract with Italian first division club Angelico Biella for the 2009/2010 season, where he stayed until January 2010. Shortly afterwards he switched to Carife Ferrara .

Sven Schultze returned to Germany for the 2010/2011 season. He signed a two-year contract with his former club Alba Berlin until the end of the 2011/2012 season. He had already played there from 1998 to 2002. Schultze played for Berlin until the summer of 2014 and won the German Cup with Berlin in both 2013 and 2014.

For the 2014/2015 season, Schultze left Alba and moved within the league to the Eisbären Bremerhaven . He signed a contract with the polar bears for a year. After the end of the 2014/15 BBL season, Schultze ended his basketball career.

The 2.06 m Power Forward / Small Forward was considered very strong.

National team

Schultze made his debut in the senior national team in February 2000 . However, he did not make the leap into the squad for the 2001 European Championship. Even convincing performances in the A2 national team were not enough for a place in the 2002 World Cup team.

He played the European Championship in 2003 in the German national team, but got little playing time. At the 2005 European Championships in Serbia and Montenegro , he was an integral part of the team for the first time and won the silver medal with it. He was also part of the German team during the 2006 World Basketball Championship in Japan .

In August 2008 he took part with the German national team at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, for which Germany had qualified with third place at the elimination tournament in Athens.

On June 15, 2010 it was announced that Schultze will not take part in the 2010 Basketball World Cup for family reasons . At the same time, this does not mean a permanent resignation from the DBB team, which he declared after the 2011 European Basketball Championship and the missed qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games .

Professional career

After his time as a professional basketball player, Schultze worked as a sports therapist at the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin . He remained connected to basketball as a youth coach: he acquired the B license in a special course and joined the coaching staff of the Berlin Basketball Association.
