Teramo Basket is a former Italian basketball club from Teramo in Abruzzo . The professional first team played from 2003 to 2012 in the top national league, Lega Basket Serie A , before the game operating company was liquidated for financial reasons. The team wore the sponsor name Banca Tercas Teramo from 2008 to the end . After a third place in 2009 in the regular Serie A season, it was enough to participate in the Eurocup 2009/10 , the second most important European club competition, where they failed in the first group stage, among other things, by the German representative Alba Berlin .

history

Founded in 1973 on the initiative of Paolo Antonetti as Associazione Italiana Cultura e Sport (AICS) Teramo , the club initially only played successfully in regional competitions. In 1995 they finally played after two promotions in a row in the fourth highest division Serie B2. In 1997, in the second season, another promotion to the B1 series was achieved. In 1999 Carlo Antonetti took over the responsibility as president and announced the goal of reaching the top division within three seasons. This did not succeed, but after the promotion to the second highest division LegADue in 2002 , the direct march through to Serie A succeeded, so that they played in the top national division with a two-year delay.

After the rise in 2003 one reached in the sequence in the series A consistently placements in the lower half of the table, before 2008 Banca Tercas new name sponsor and Andrea Capobianco was the new coach of the team. Teramo was able to play for the first time with Jaycee Carroll and David J. Moss, among others, and reached third place after the regular season and thus qualification for the second most important European club competition ULEB Eurocup . In the play-offs reached for the first time for the Italian championship, however, they were eliminated in the first round against the eventual runner-up Armani Jeans Milan . In the following season they were eliminated in the first group stage of the Eurocup 2009/10 in the first group stage. Even in the national championship it was no longer enough to get a play-off placement. After a totally botched start to the season in the 2010/11 season, coach Capobianco was dismissed.

At the end of the 2010/11 season, being penultimate, you could only avoid relegation by purchasing a " wild card ". President Antonetti promised the payment, the modalities of which met with sharp criticism from the second division, but had to give up his post for new donors. The potential successor and promoter Reyer Venezia complained about the late payment of the wild card fee of € 500,000, which is why the court also granted him the right to start in the top division, so that the Serie A with 17 and one team more than usual started in the 2011/12 season. It was possible to avoid relegation in this season, but the liquidity of the gaming company was no longer given and approval for another season was not granted. Then the professional team of the club was dissolved.
