Dimitri Lauwers (born April 30, 1979 in Liège ) is a Belgian basketball player . He played in France for four years from 2000 before moving to Italy , where he was later naturalized. However, he continues to play for his home country Belgium in international games and is a member of the Belgian national team , for which he was also active in the 2011 European Championship finals . Since March 2013 he has been playing in Italy again.

Career

Lauwers began his professional career in 1997 with the basketball club from Ostend , with which he was Belgian cup winner in 1998, as well as twice runner-up and cup finalist. At the international level, they reached the semi-finals of the Korać Cup in 1999 , which was lost to CB Estudiantes Madrid . In addition, Lauwers played together with Dirk Nowitzki in the world selection of young players, which was able to defeat the US selection at the Nike Hoop Summit 1998 , and is thus the only Belgian young player to have participated in this comparison. In 2000 Lauwers switched to the French LNB Pro A , where he reached the play-off semi- finals of the French championship with MSB from Le Mans , which was lost to the eventual champion EB Pau-Orthez . For the following season 2001/02 he moved to the regional rival and league competitor from Cholet , with whom he was also eliminated in the championship semifinals against eventual champions ASVEL . He then played two seasons in Dijon , with which he won the league cup Semaine de As against his former club from Le Mans in the final in the second season . In the championship play-offs, however, they were eliminated from the main round first MSB in the first round. At the international level, the final of the FIBA EuroCup Challenge was reached in 2004 , which was lost to the German representative of Mitteldeutscher BC .

In 2004 Lauwers moved to Italy and played in the Lega Basket Serie A in Teramo . After one season he moved to the club from Scafati in the second Italian league LegADue , with which he was able to achieve the championship and promotion to Serie A in 2006. After two seasons they rose again in 2008 after economic difficulties and point deductions. Lauwers moved to league rivals and traditional club Virtus Bologna in February 2008, but after their return to Serie A in 2005 they also played a very poor season at that time. After a few missions for the Bolognese Lauwers moved back to Pallacanestro Varese in January 2009 in the second division. However, the dominant European basketball club of the 1970s was able to achieve the championship in the second division and promotion to Serie A together with Lauwers. Lauwers himself moved to Avellino , the Campanian rival of his ex-club Scafati Basket, in the summer of 2009 , where he played again until 2011 with the Polish national player Szymon Szewczyk , who was also his teammate at Scafati in the 2006/07 season. For the first time since the European Championship in 1993 , the Belgian national team managed to qualify for a European Championship finals in 2010 . Shortly before the start of the 2011 finals , the most important Belgian player, Axel Hervelle, was injured and the Belgians had no win with Lauwers and were eliminated in the preliminary round. In March 2012 Lauwers finally left Avellino and returned to Ostend, where he had started his career. After the 2012 championship, Lauwers did not return to the Flemish squad and in March 2013 he joined the Italian second division team Tezenis from Verona .

Others

Lauwers is with the Italian since 2009 beach volleyball - European champion Greta Cicolari friends.
