Duane Harland Woodward (born June 4, 1976 in New York City , New York ) is a retired American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Woodward played as a professional in Europe, initially in the Austrian and German basketball leagues . Woodward later played mainly in Cyprus as well as in Italy and Venezuela . In 2011 he ended his career as a player with GS Peristeri. Woodward's career in German-speaking countries was overshadowed by a massive assault on a teammate at the German first division club BCJ Tigers, which led to the player's temporary dismissal.

Career

Woodward went in 1994 to study at the Boston College , where he worked for the college team Eagles in the Big East Conference played NCAA Division I. The Eagles won their first and only Big East championship tournament in 1997; In 1975 they won a tournament of the then ECAC New England and later in 2007 one of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In the national NCAA finals one year earlier they were eliminated in the second round in 1996 against the Yellowjackets of the Georgia Institute of Technology , as Conference Champion they lost again in 1997 in the second round this time after extra time against the Hawks of Saint Joseph's University . Woodward, who scored 1,249 points in 117 NCAA championship games in his four-year college career, is one of the top three "ball thieves" on this college team's all-time leaderboard with 204 ball wins .

After his college career, Woodward got a contract in the Austrian A-League in 1998 with BK Kalendermacher from Klosterneuburg , which reached fourth place in the 1998/99 season . Then Woodward tried in the "summer league" United States Basketball League (USBL) to recommend for a higher-endowed contract in his home country. For the 1999/2000 season, however, he returned to Europe and played in the French Ligue Nationale de Basket for Olympique from Antibes , who were only able to ensure relegation in fourth from bottom of the table. After he could not recommend himself for higher tasks in the International Basketball League as well as in the USBL in the summer of 2000 , he was committed at the beginning of the 2000/01 Basketball Bundesliga by the German previous year's climber BCJ Tigers from Hamburg . However, the talented basketball player made a name for himself with his unrestrained teammates , which culminated in a massive assault on his teammate Peter van Elswyk in training, who then had to be treated in hospital. As a result, Woodward was dismissed, but after ten defeats in a row in March 2001 brought back by the relegation-threatened first division club. After a shoulder injury at the end of the season, the team that did not win a game without Woodward in that season could no longer avoid relegation to the 2nd basketball league as penultimate. Woodward, however, stayed with the club and was able to win the championship in the North Group in the 2nd Bundesliga 2001/02 and achieve a sporting resurgence. However, due to licensing violations and lack of evidence of economic efficiency, the club no longer received a new license and had to start over in the first regional league .

For the 2002/03 season Woodward moved to Proteas EKA AEL from Limassol in the Republic of Cyprus . With this club he won two championships in a row, with the 2004 double of championship and cup competition. In the FIBA Europe League 2003/04 , in which Woodward was selected as the top scorer of the competition for the all-star game of the competition, the team was able to qualify for the round of 16. Woodward also played in the European summer of 2003 and 2004 for the Toros from Aragua in Venezuela and again in the USBL. For the 2004/05 season he got a contract with the Italian Lega Basket Serie A with Sedima from Roseto degli Abruzzi . This club returned this season in the play-offs for the championship, but lost in the first round against the eventual champions Climamio Bologna . After another station in Venezuela, Woodward got after the beginning of the 2005/06 season a fixed-term contract with the Montepaschi club from Siena in Serie A, for which he completed 19 games and in the most competitive European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2005/06 , in which Montepaschi played could not qualify for the intermediate round of the 16 best teams. In the 2006/07 season he then played for the Italian league rivals Siviglia Wear from Teramo , who were only able to secure relegation to fourth from bottom of the table in Serie A. In the 2007/08 season he played again in Limassol and was again selected for the "All-Star Game" in the FIBA EuroCup 2007/08 . The club achieved its greatest international success when it qualified for the Final Four tournament of this competition. As the host of the tournament, however, they lost the semifinals against Dexia Mons-Hainaut and ended up in third place.

In the 2009/10 season Woodward first played in Argentina for the Boca Juniors from Buenos Aires , and then after a station in Tripoli, Lebanon at the end of the season for FMP Železnik from Belgrade . At the end of the 2010/11 season Woodward was active for GS Peristeri from Athens in the Greek A1 Ethniki , who were eliminated in the first play-off round for the championship against series champion Panathinaikos Athens . After Woodward was previously active as a youth coach, he was from 2012 a season's assistant coach for the Privateers of SUNY Maritime College in Division III of the NCAA . After a season as a video scout in the coaching staff of the Rams at Fordham University in Division I, Woodward switched to the Hawks program at Monmouth University in the county of the same name in the New York Metropolitan Area in 2014 .
