Pramod Bhagat ( Oriya ପ୍ରମୋଦ ଭଗତ , born June 4, 1988 ) is an Indian badminton player . He is unable to walk due to poliomyelitis and starts in Parabadminton in the SL3 starting class in singles and doubles. Bhagat aims to participate in the 2020 Summer Paralympics .

Life

Pramod Bhagat comes from the Indian state of Odisha and lives in the capital Bhubaneswar . He fell ill with poliomyelitis as a child and has been unable to walk since then. Bhagat is a graduate of an Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and works for a state social insurance company. He sees his handicap as a gift from God that enables him to surpass himself.

Athletic career

In 2002 Pramod Bhagat started badminton and since 2006, when he defeated able-bodied players, he has been practicing parabadminton as a competitive sport. In 2007 in Bangkok he won bronze in singles and doubles at his first Badminton World Championship for the disabled . At the 2009 World Cup in Seoul , Pramod Bhagat won gold in the individual. In 2011 he was about to give up competitive sport due to financial problems. But in 2013 he won the doubles world championship with Manoj Sarkar in Dortmund . In the badminton competition of the Para-Asian Games 2014 he reached the semifinals, but was defeated by Manoj Sarkar. In 2015 Pramod Bhagat won the world title in singles in Stoke Mandeville and won silver in doubles with Tarun Tarun . In Ulsan , South Korea , it was only enough for bronze in the individual at the 2017 World Cup. At the Para-Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018 , he won the title in singles and doubles bronze. At the Badminton World Championships for the disabled in Basel in 2019 , Pramod Bhagat won his fourth individual world title in the final against Englishman Daniel Bethell . In the doubles occupied by four Indians, Pramod Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar defeated the duo Kumar Nitesh and Tarun Tarun.

In 2019 Pramod Bhagat received the Arjuna Award for his outstanding athletic achievements .
