Fiona Ferro (born March 12, 1997 in Libramont-Chevigny , Belgium ) is a French tennis player .

Career

Ferro, whose mother is Belgian and whose father has Italian roots, started playing tennis at the age of seven. As a junior she was national champion in France in several age groups.

In 2012 Ferro first appeared on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . In 2014 she made her debut on the WTA tour in Strasbourg , where she received a wildcard for qualification, and was eliminated in the first round. She was also allowed to start with a wildcard at the French Open 2014 , but lost to Sabine Lisicki at the beginning .

In 2015 she reached a final for the first time at the ITF tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Aschaffenburg , but it took until 2018 before she was able to land her first professional title in Grenoble in front of a home crowd. In the same year she succeeded in the French Open against Carina Witthöft, her first victory in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. She then started a series of three tournament wins in a row, including one in the $ 80,000 category in Olomouc , and was listed in the top 100 of the tennis world rankings for the first time after her first entry into the quarterfinals of a WTA tournament in Guangzhou .

After a weak start to the 2019 season with four opening defeats on hard court in a row, Ferro first scored in Guadalajara at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series and then the semi-finals in Lugano . She celebrated her greatest career success with her first WTA title in Lausanne , where she defeated her compatriot Alizé Cornet in three sets in the final. Then she was able to advance into the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the US Open after defeating Kristina Mladenovic and ended the season among the top 100 in the world. In the same year Ferro was in the quarter-final duel against Belgium their debut for the French Fed Cup team , but they lost there in doubles.

In 2020, Ferro moved into the second round in Melbourne for the first time and achieved their best world rankings in March just before the corona-related end of the season with 52nd place.
